Great band..
If you think Roxy were just a bunch of weak, art school poseurs, check out "Foolproof"--a fantastic bootleg LP of stuff from the 1974/75 tour that was deemed too wild and abrasive for the Viva! album. Or any Eno-era bootleg, for that matter.
I love Steely Dan and Roxy Music. Love 'em.

22Weird. I love Roxy Music, yet despise The Dan to no end. If I had a time machine I would go back and be sure that Fagen was never born.

I concur wholeheartedly with this statement, only I'd take Becker out as well. Hell, why not get rid of Michael McDonald and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter while we're at it?
Roxy Music are very much NOT CRAP.

I could never find that lp. That's the bees knees, JW sounds like John Entwistle and Chris Squire together in a blender.
Need a burn/copy if possible.

25i had a phase with early roxy music stuff when i was about 12 or 13.
now i can't stand it.
why?
because BRYAN FERRY'S VOICE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot emphasize enough how horrid he is -- his warbling, inept "vibrato", his putrid lyrics, his insanely obnoxious "cute 'n' cheeky" mannerisms, bryan ferry is scum. his band may or may not have had good musicians in it, but it was his band, therefore it is scum.
in fact, when i was into it, i was just starting to play music and i found it exciting how on the early albums the various band members are given a lot of free reign to noodle around.
in retrospect that doesn't even help the music -- it's annoying, and it brings to light what crap these songs are that these guys are dicking around over them to fight the boredom.
i can't believe the "not crap"s this is getting.
i'll take the uptight arrangements of "the dan" any day. they put out some crappy crap too, but i mean listen to CHUCK RAINEY on aja. the bass line on josie eats roxy music.
one last thing: notice how on "avalon" they smother bryan ferry's voice in reverb to try to mask the fact that he can't sing.

you hear the break in ferry's voice in 'do the strand' or his little yodel in 'love is the drug' or his version of 'jealous guy' and the dedication in the playing of the group throughout, and it's clear that they are driven by emotion and strong ideas.
Mr. Midgett (aka the Midge) has it once again. There is some who draw on fiction and present as nonfiction. There are some that bring a level of performance to their performance. Although I am pretty much a meat and potatoes kind of guy who likes my music wounded and bleeding, I am also impressed with those who wear the fiction thing well...like DEVO, Roxy, Bowie (edit: I would also include Rick 'Didget' Sims and Jon Spencer). These were folks that presented something more theatrical... they were almost doing characters and taking on personas. The only problem was, they really did mean all that they did. They really laid it down. They really did sweat and push and pinch that stuff out without the other stuff getting in the way.
On the other hand, some have attempted but failed. Tom Waits....has his moments but often his act resembles Emmet Kelly the clown. Kiss... oh don't get me started on Kiss... The dudes in Soundtracks of Our Lives....holy shit! Someone take the mirrors away from those guys! All quite bad to the point of punishable. RFTC never did it for me either...smelled weak and pretend-y.... Urge Overkill....nuff said.
I say the proof is in the pudding and Roxy has the pudding to show for it.
They are another in a long line of exceptions to the rule.

29Funny, we just walked about 6 miles, stopped to eat some Thai food and a couple of blocks away I started singing, for no particular reason, Do The Strand.
Always loved the Roxy Music. Phil Manzanera is excellent, beard nonwithstanding.

30I disliked "Avalon" enough to not bother hunting down anything else by Roxy Music. Sell me. Keeping in mind that I do not like either foppish dandyism or saxophone. I think Steely Dan's ok, though.
