A dude? Are you completely sure about that? I had him pegged for a total queen. I've got spot-on gaydar - not like I need it.

Respectable punk.

I was too young to be influenced by the dead kennedys and am too old to care about them now, But what I have read and seen of the man..he seems like the sort of guy who is desperate to hide the fact that he's a bit of a simpleton by coming up with bizarre (but mainly) stupid comments on society.

Case point. One of the many rants on his website: in which he Explains that 'Shoegazer' music was created by Record company executives and politicians to stop White America embracing Hip/hop and Rap in the early 90's. Hmmmmmmmm

Now being a kid at the time (and also white) lets look at the things I remember from the early 90's : Air jordans, the fresh prince of bel air, NWA, happy pants,MC HAMMER and Boys in the hood...i could go on, but sadly I don't recall Kevin shields being a major cultural influence on mainstream society and more importantly ..The Kids

In fact don't White Kids make up the hight % of the population who buy rap (and therefore mostly black) artists cd's?

Im all for conspiracy theories, but they should aleast be a little plausible .

CRAP....and now fat

No, he doesn't. He says that the media expressed a preference for terms like "slacker" and "shoegaze" in steretyping young people. This is a pretty simple fact.

I'm not 100% behind Jello, but he's sincere and he's made some great records that stand fairly comfortably in the shadows of bands like CRASS whose style he was copping fairly heavily. The worst thing about the man is his relentless belief that Alternative Tenticles and his own career is somehow vastly important and of absolute priority. Really, thats not so bad because hi-fis have off switches and I can choose not to read his shit if it gets pompous.

"the only reason this later batch of bands(grunge, Green Day, the Offspring) got signed and pushed was to help steer white suburban kids away from political black rap music. . "We can't have these future middle-class model citizens finding out what America is really like!! No, no, no! Come on kids! Shoe gaze, shoe gaze! Remember, you're slackers! You're Generation X! You're not supposed to care!" The whole slacker myth was imposed from above after these very alleged slackers helped throw George Bush out of the White House."

black/hip hop culture exploded in the 90's in fact it was embraced by record labels and the kids alike.I honestly don't think green day, offspring or even ride were a secret weapon.
Where were you living in 93' Jello ?

but heres another Gem from Jello

On drugs and kids http://music.consumercide.com/dks/dk-Jello_in.htm

As far as helping kids with addictions and education in schools,
simply telling them that "drugs are bad" and "sex is bad," cause who's
gonna listen to that shit anyway, why not offer them elective classes,
as early as junior high, where the students try the drugs on a
supervised basis. Then they can work out and talk out how the drugs
affected them
and if there might be an addictive personality problem
in the future.

Well, ^ he's clearly not talking about shoegaze the genre, but of the action "to look at one's shoes" which I'm assuming was a journo/rag phrase used with the likes of the terms "slacker" and "grunge".

And to be fair, while hip hop culture may have "exploded" in the 90s, alternative rock and pop music were still the bigger dogs.

Anyway, Jello Biafra is a respectable punk rocker.

i have a problem with speaking ill of the guy - i grew up in a shitty small town, here was a guy that could talk and cuss eloquently about censorship & the pmrc & grass & dubya senior & weirdo fundamentalists etc etc... oh, and he records with al jourgenson & doa & fronted the dead kennedys & operates a "trustable" (i.e., buy anything on this label and it will be good) record label.

he meant the world to me when i was in middle school - high school ('88-93) & a little bit of college. now we don't really hang out too much & i probably wouldn't go see him live & it doesn't seem like such a big deal.

but c'mon - that highschool shit will always be more pure than 99% of anything we do at age 30. he's always gonna be not crap, even if i notice the paunch & the repetition & the logic stretches.

I like Dead Kennedy's but when I listened to this fellas spoken word it made me want to call George Bush up and take him out for a drink beside an oil field I would have just set fire to

His whiney self righteous tone annoyed the fuck out of me and the already converted audience egging on his attempts at humour didn't help matters

Crap when away from music
