You could just say they're from Wisconsin.
No, see, you're supposed to be
slagging us, not showering us with praise.
No, see, you guys are supposed to be showering.

I would love to start a war of the words with Conor Oberst. That would be awesome.

yes we will start showering you with something the next time we see you, it won't make you happy, wait it might make YOU happy but it wouldn't make most "normal people" happy.

Example?
The most famous Pavement put downs are in the song "Range Life" from "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain". Stephen Malkmus (or, more appropriately, the narrator of this song) says some caustic and funny things about Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots. You can read the "Range Life" lyrics (and see Billy Corgan's response to them!)
on this webpage.
Another good Pavement jab is the song "Unseen Power Of The Picket Fence". In this case, the target was R.E.M. You can read Malkmus' explanation of the song
here.
On a non-Pavement note, has anyone ever heard "Weird" Al Yankovic's chop job on Billy Joel? It's
pretty funny.

"Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" is hardly a jab, its a tribute

This was good for audible laughs from Tree. I read this about ten years ago. The other morning, I headed for work and grabbed
Wowee Zowee on the way out. I got up in the morning and listened to Pavement.
My personal favorite is some little blurb interview that went with a review of
Brighten the Corners. Malkmus was asked what he thought of Courtney Love in
The People vs. Larry Flynt and he said something about how she seemed to do a really good job, followed by, "you know, whatever keeps her the fuck out of music".

The two brothers from STP were asked about what they thought of that in an interview years ago and they said they thought it was cool and funny. I guess if you're in a band with someone like Weiland, you have to have a sense of humor.

There's an interview with Stephen Malkmus from years ago where he said that he once admired R.E.M. but at that point "didn't understand what the fuck they were doing" (or something to that effect).
It's at least a puzzling song.
Maybe someone here can ask Malkmus about it.
