damn the internet! can we trust anything we find?
google... entering "pronounce" and "paiste", this is the first site that came up... but like anything we find on the internet, can we *trust* it?
http://www.drumdojo.com/paiste.htm
and by the way, they are NOT swiss, and i have no problem asserting that, since a simple trip to their website (paiste.com) will tell you they're from estonia... which corroborates the link i posted above, at least the 'estonia' element of it.

Ahhh, I didn't think about the fact that their cymbals are MANUFACTURED in Switzerland, so obviously they don't have to be Swiss. I've never been to their site so that's ignorance on my part. Thanks for the info though.
Also, going by the pronunciation given on that page, it seems the word is pronounced PIE-StUH or PIE-stEH:
But how to give advice for pronounciation?
Let's make it to parts: Pai & Ste. You say 'pai' just the same way you say 'pie' (apple pie). Your 'a' must be quite open, like 'car'
Then 'ste'... well like the beginning of stella or step and make it short.
This is the "right" way then, following your advice of "can we trust this information."

How come, after I posted that Moog was pronounced Mowg (Mow, as in "mow the lawn", guh, yes it rhymes with "Vogue"), there were two other posts that said the same thing?

No, it rhymes with 'vogue'.
(ha, ha, just kidding. I thought that was strange too.)

No problem.
I've heard it from several Paiste employees over the years, including the late Steve Ettleson, who was the first to tell me that the family pronounced it that way. When I talked to Erik Paiste on the phone (several years ago, when I worked music retail), he didn't correct me, so I assume that's the correct way to pronounce it.
In any case, I understand. People butcher my last name all the time. It's pronounced Qued-lobe.

Because when you wrote Mowg I think people thought you were trying to sound like "cow" or "wow".

How about Neumann?
There's a commercial on Chicago television for a subdivision called Neumann Homes and they pronounce it "Newman".
