They just play rock n roll. Great rock n roll. If you dont enjoy that then it's a shame.
Also, a lot of people seem to be basing their opinions on facts about the band rather than the music. What's that about?

I'll state the obvious to build to a point.
Some bands are all (or at least as much as possible) about playing music. The smarter bands in this category (or those that care) figure out how to minimize the effects of their non-music impacts, which are pretty much a distraction.
Other bands tie together a package of music and some other things. Some tie in the the band stuff to make a political statement, some to make a fashion statement, some to wear eyeball-on-the-head costumes and never reveal their true identity.
This band plays their music while they star themselves in their own media soap opera. I see some folks on this thread objecting to that in principle, others objecting to the way that they do it. Contrary to your point - it's totally legitimate to criticize all of the non-music things about this band since they so obviously spend a bunch of time on those things.
Or, to put it more simply - nobody physically forced them to get on the cover of Spin magazine.

I've got to throw in a not crap here. I don't think they're an AMAZING band, but when I saw them live, they really did rock. She was a great frontwoman. I don't choose to listen to the album much, but I enjoy it when I do. In the same way I have issues with The Libertines, it's kinda hard to defend a band that jumps into bed so eagerly and happily with the (British?) music press....but underneath all the shit I believe there's a good band making some good shouty rock tunes. Not great, but not crap.
And Maps is a truly beautiful song. Just lovely.

Well maybe it's just because I dont read music magazines or maybe they arent as famous in England. All I know of them is an ep, an album, and a show I saw earlier this year. I dont think I've ever seen a Spin magazine (again, maybe not an English thing) but I assume its some huge popular music rag and I assume bands such as Nirvana and maybe even Sonic Youth have been on the cover in the past. Does that affect how good the band is?

Your assumption about Spin is right.
Being on the cover doesn't make you a bad band (although the correlation is horrifyingly consistent). But if you're there, there's more about you than "just playing music". Those things are up for legit criticism.
For a cultural cross reference, replace the word "Spin" in my post with "NME".
I think.

Well I haven't read NME in years but I know Mogwai have been on the cover. And there's really nothing "showbiz" (or whatever) about those kids.
I dunno, I agree that celebrity musicians are 99 times out of 100 not worth bothering with. But I never saw the YYYS as being that famous, or having that much about them (as in image) apart from Karen O dressing a bit funny. They're certainly not just another in a huge trend like punks, goths, nu-metallers or those crazy post-rock automatons.

For anyone in Chicago who cares the Yeah Yeah yeahs are playing a 'secret' show at the Logan Square Auditorium in Febuary.
Just got me some tickets, I will be up front drooling at karen O. if anyone wants to come punch me.
I shouldn't be hard to miss, I'll be the one with the huge boner.

The music is ok. But I'd like to have sex with the singer. She's not the prettiest thing, but she's kinda sexy... there's a difference you know...
I feel a poll coming on...

Nice single, fucko.

Couldn't agree more.
