I think I had some gloves on. Other than that I was just wearing Jeans and a army type shirt. Small hole in pants, a scuff on the shirt. I have a leather jacket that I wear on occasion.

I'm not going to tell you what to do or what to wear. I personally always have a jacket and gloves and a helmet on. I live in a city and have to contend with a lot of traffic sometimes. I've shredded gloves in a fall before and a good leather is good for 100 feet or so of sliding on the pavement before the road scrapes off your skin.

Ok I will tell you what to wear. Wear gloves, jacket, long pants and a full faced hlemet every time. Who cares how it looks? You'll look better with the gear on then you'll look in a hospital bed or coffin. In the summer there's vented and perforated jackets and gloves you can wear. Helmets will have vent systems too.

Seriously, people don't ride bikes to be safe but there is plenty you can do to minimize damage and risks. Also check out David Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling" or take an MSF course. If you ride within your limits, stay aware and stay defensive, and never assume drivers can see you or will stop themselves, you'll be riding for a long time.

No offense, but i don't think Tom needs to be told what to wear on a motorcycle. I doubt that he started the thread looking for safety tips, or even sympathy for that matter.

But oh yeah! Tom, i am glad you're relatively unscathed. Well, you're scathed, but not seriously. And for this i am glad!

No offense but I don't care what you think or what he was looking for. He posted on a public forum and thus the subject is up for discussion. Riders need to be reminded how vulnerable they are, as well as how dangerous they can be to others. If riders don't take it seriously or don't know how to ride, they have no business being on a bike. I didn't assume he was reckless, I just wanted to make sure he was properly outfitted for his own sake and if not to discuss his options.

Safety and accidents are a taboo subject with many riders and that shouldn't be the case. There needs to be an open and free discussion. He responded positively to what I said so maybe you didn't need to comment?

But why should i butt out if it's on a public forum? ;)

Seconded.

And if you are to carry on biking....tow ropes, just always be wary of tow ropes....especially when they're long enough to stretch across two lanes at a busy junction....

motorcycle people: you scare me. or, i am scared for your well-being. i appreciate your right to do whatever activites you enjoy in this life, but i get so scared when i see you in my rear-view. and you go speeding by me. what if my asshole passenger jokingly hits me on the shoulder and i veer slightly the very second you're passing and i throw you off balance and you wipe out and get your head smashed by another car. if it were another car next to me, they might get a little scratch and dent, but you kind motorcycle driver will fall off balance and die or get hurt very much badly and that makes me very uncomfortable. i dont want you motorcycle peoples dying and hurt badly.

seriously my heart races whenever i see a motorcyclist in my mirrors.

tom - i'm very glad you are ok.

As a motorcycle person: car people, you scare me.

You're right though. Occasionally I ask myself "wtf are you doing? You could die or have have your life altered permanantly in a split second."

If your careful though, it's no more life threatening than riding a bike on a city road. I don't ride on the highway. Not only is my bike really too small, but the thought of it scares me.
