Zoom drum machines aren't bad either. Really cool sounds packed into these things.

I really dig the SR-16. Cool little box that does the job...super easy to program, and since I use only step recording even EASIER.

As for the onstage volume, we never trust the PA of the place for the drum machine. We lug a small PA system (2 2 way EV PA speakers driven by one 300W per channel power amp, 1 2x18 subwoofer run by a 1800W mono bridged power amp) to every show we play. This way, we know how it sounds. If the club has good sound, great. If not, we're ready. We use the drum machine with a CD backup. Our drum machine is a Boss DR-660, using an Alesis Datadisk (c) 1989 for memory storage. It's never failed us in a live setting yet, although it's not state of the art.

I just bought a PA this afternoon because of a great deal. 160Watt SoundTech in new condition for $120. Not the greatest PA, but it's all I need for right this second.

I kind of thought of just getting my drum machine its own PA because I don't trust any clubs. And like you said, then I know how it sounds. And it sounds pretty good this evening.
