i was born without glasses and now i will die without them. it's so zen. one less material possession i have to think about. einstein in his antivanity would certainly agree.

I will undergo the LASIK procedure this Friday.

Yes. Same for me. I don't even own a working pair of glasses, which is probably unwise.

I have a recurring fantasy of being stranded on a Caribbean island, where I must survive only on available resources. It's not so bad, as coconuts, plantains, and slow-moving, dimwitted marble-meated animals are plentiful. Before long, I encounter Ursula Andress collecting shells on the beachfront.

Every time I have this fantasy, it is interrupted by the dream-shattering truth that unless a lifetime supply of Acuvue 2's (strength -4.5, base-curve 8.3) and several gallons of sterile protein solvent washed up onshore in a giant waterproof crate, I would probably die within a month. At the very least, I would be doomed live a miserable, blurry existence.

Lasik could change all that.

Hey, I just got an idea for a tv ad campaign...

I have goddamn CATARACTS in both eyes! This is when the lens becomes cloudy due to clumping of the proteins it's composed of. Unusual in people my age, but it happens sometimes. I have to have SURGERY on BOTH EYES in the next couple months. Less than pleased about it. They REMOVE PART OF YOUR EYE and replace it with A PLASTIC LENS!!!

On the plus side, it's a very common and low-risk outpatient procedure, and I am told that my vision will be much improved, in addition to removing the cloudiness. I look forward to having it over with, not least so I can fucking SEE again.

Corrective, NON-ELECTIVE eye surgery: an optimistic NOT CRAP.

(edit: WAAAH, I know, but I just found out and am still a tad unsettled.)

As for Lasik, it seems cool. All of my pals who have done it are really happy.

Just don't go mountaineering. A doctor who climbed Everest who had had Lasik done went blind at altitude.

Most people don't climb above 17k feet, but I always wondered what would happen if an airplane lost pressure.

congrats on making the leap to the laser-eyes side, brw! it only burns like fucking hell for a couple of minutes; take their advice & take a nap - you'll be OK when you wake.

VERY IMPORTANT: make sure that you have someone on hand to drive you from the hospital to your home. do not try to be all macho and tough about it. and it's probably a good idea to avoid smoky bars for the first few weeks if at all possible...
