make up your own song.
if you're committed enough to getting a song out of your head... just focus on making something up... i've found that if you put enough energy into something completely unrelated to the stuck-in-your-head song (thinking about math-rock is especially effective when combating 80s synth-pop or arena rock), it goes away.
speaking of stuck-in-your-head stuff... anyone familiar with the Louis Black "If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college" bit?

Listen to it. Over and over and over again until you can't stand the sound of it any more and are ready to stab yourself in the eardrums with ball point pens to ensure you never hear it again. Then listen to something drastically different, like "Metal Machine Music," to give yourself a kind of audio sorbet and clease the palate.

My solution is to transfer the irritating song to someone else. The song doesn't seem to care who's head it's playing in, as long as it's playing somewhere. Find someone who deserves it more than you and sing it to them.

Mayfair wrote:A good song to use is "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies (not the current B-96 hit "Sugar, sugar, how'd ya get so fly" thing). That will clean you mind of ANY other song, lick-ity-split!
For some perverse reason, I actually like Sugar Sugar by the Archies.
I wish Brighter Death Now would do a power electronics version of the song.

Of course, then you're stuck with this song, which is much worse.

Ghod I hate that song.
I usually try and imagine the same song as a death metal song. Change it to a minor key, add growly, gutteral vocals, double kick-drum rolls and a chaotic pentatonic guitar solo. That often works for me.
