I know I'm gonna get killed for this, but:
Patti Smith's supposedly divine cover of "Gloria," off of "Horses."

You're really playing with fire there, Mister.
Duran Duran did a whole ablum of awful covers, including:
White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)
I Wanna Take You Higher
Perfect Day
Watching The Detectives
Lay Lady Lay
911 Is A Joke
Success (Iggy Pop)
Crystal Ship
Ball Of Confusion
Thank You (Led Zeppelin)
I Wanna Take You Higher Again

mattw wrote:Make that plural and you've got Guns N' Roses' The Spaghetti Incident?, though Axl Rose's British accent is a hoot.
Is that the album with their execrable "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" cover on it?
Not quite the same topic, but there's some worthwhile discussion here:

Good pick: an already awful song made worse by one of the most annoying and most aggressively bland artists of his era.
I've got one that's almost as good: Limp Bizkit covered "Wish You Were Here."

I just heard some nu-metal scream dork punk cover of Mr. Phil Collins's "In The Air Tonight" as bumper in a commercial for the new Miami Vice movie.
I love this, this Phil Collins song.
This cover, she failed to capture the essense and the beauty of the pacing and payoff of the fine fine original.
This cover, by this unknown nu-metal scream dork punk band, she fails my friends.
She fails, and we are all the worse off for it.
