This is, unintentionally, the only way I think I can actually make music. Damn.

I'm glad to read that other people are as disappointed by Sonic Youth as I... I've been made to feel like I was missing out on the most enjoyable listening experience in the world.
Others include Guided By Voices (blech), Placebo (unlistenable, whining nonsense), Siouxsie and the Banshees (I know she's supposed to be great, but she just doesn't do it for me), Mirah (I like Cat Power, so my sister raved about this bitch and it sucked) and a bunch of other crap I can't remember.

Can. I absolutely do not get the rumpus about Can. Many fellow record collector geek friends have tried to convince me, but they just don't work for me.
Same with Sparks. I like a bunch of bands that rip off Sparks, but Sparks themselves make me want to leave the room.
Oh, and while I grew to love Fugazi, I still think Minor Threat were a good but fairly unremarkable hardcore band. Some good ideas, but most of the Midwest bands could kick their asses.

rayj wrote:-Nearly every time a band has been described to me, I end up disappointed. A lot of bands' imagery, and what they are 'going for', end up being at least somewhat compromised by several nebulous factors, right?
I totally agree with this. I think that is why I just spend the money and check stuff out, and sell back the shit I don't like. That being said......
Long Fin Killie - A lot of people described them in a way that would've made it almost impossible to not buy their first record. Aside from the first three songs the rest of the record sucked, big time.
El Guapo - One of two bands (Minus the Bear being the other) that made me stop listening to my my friends descriptions of bands. These guys were described to me as 'Don Cab meets Tortoise.' I would describe them, and Minus the Bear, as total shit.
Jets to Brazil - A lot of my friends love this band. I really liked Jawbreaker. Jets to Brazil suck.
There are a few others (the Libraness record, any Wolf Eyes side project, Mum), but what's life without a little disappointment?

Rodan - Slint with no good ideas.
Gang of Four - What's to like? All the songs sound the same, no hooks, one dynamic, boring.
Year of the Rabbit - Loved Failure, hated YotR.
Melvins - Meh-lvins.
Replacements - Pub-rock done faster.
Sugar - Husker Du with the corners sanded smooth.

Portastatic - Bright Ideas. This is the most recent album they did, my best friend kept on telling me "Go ahead, buy it, it's a brilliant album". Since I trust him, I bought it thinking that it's impossible it could be crap. Well.....it's crap and I never understood where's the point of playing in two similar bands when the original one is great (Superchunk I mean). Honestly I still don't understand......can someone who plays in two similar bands, playing the same kind of music, explain me that????
Pelican. blah blah blah blah crap. The first ep was fun, ok I admit it, but then, the album is just boring.....I bought because of that buzz going on in the press everywhere, thinking it will be much better than the ep. Wrong. Pelican made me realize how good Blutch is!!!!!

I know, I know. But if I can manfully deal with having the MC5, the Ramones, the Minutemen, Gang of Four and Sonic Youth bad mouthed, you can handle some static on Can and Minor Threat. C'mon, this is a growing and learning experience. Kinda like AA.

A lot of Sonic Youth wasn't what I was led to expect, but recordings from that early era (Shaking Hell, etc.) hint at something completely out of hand. I feel like I might have missed out on something.

Can and This Heat. I just don't get it. At some points I think, "shit this is great!" but then something happens that fucks it all up for me.
It seems like Jam-Band-With-A-Plan to me.
Please explain what I'm missing?
