But when you put it that way it he seems a little selfish--in the same way that mountain-climbers or other dangerous sportsmen show a disregard for their families, when they leave their children orphaned.
Or soldiers, or miners, or fishermen, or police, or firefighters... lots of dangerous jobs, neh? He had a calling, as peculiar as it was, and he knew it could get him killed, and everyone knew it could get him killed... but he kept on. While taking pointless risks while you have a family is selfish (heroin, say), it's his job, and there's no reason his life should shut down because he has a family (especially considering that that was how he provided for them, neh?).

Pour out a Foster's for the crazy motherfucker.

exactly, is a coal miner or commercial fisherman 'selfish' because he doesn't work in an office shuffling papers around and typing on a computer all day?
People gotta work, man....sometimes jobs are fucked up and dangerous, and not everyone is a pussy.
Croc Hunter, I enjoyed watching you do your fucked up job to no end and you seemed like a decent guy.
Before you feel too bad for his wife and kids remember he left a giant pile of cash for them by doing this shit, they aren't gonna be homeless or anything.

"Bear baiting"??

While it might be easy to assume he was some kind of macho idiot getting a rise out of animals for the sake of video sales, he was a committed environmentalist (emphasis on the word mentalist) and saw himself as an educator rather than a daredevil. His videos are amazing, his zoo is shit hot and his death is awful. Stop being so cynical.

and as for irresponsible - tell that to the father and mothers speeding to the office every morning, tired and overworked or to the guy or girl drink driving home after Xmas office night out. It was his job!

Irwin’s shtick was just a means for him to (financially) support and promote his ideals. The majority of the money he made went towards buying/preserving habitat all over the world. He was a vehement conservationist, and not nearly as stupid as his TV persona would lead you to believe.

His zoo is incredible.

As for his ‘tomfoolery’ with deadly animals etc – He knew what he was doing , and again, not nearly as stupid as his TV persona would have one believe. He was born into his profession. His father owned and operated one of Australia's first reptile parks. There are very few people as genuinely passionate re their profession/ideals as Steve Irwin.

It’s kind of ironic that it was a stingray that got him in the end. There are now three recorded deaths from stingrays in Australia’s history. He had not once been bitten by a venomous snake.

Just point a fucking camera at them and let them do their shit and narrate some knowledgeable stuff over the top. There is absolutely no need to fuck with the animals. No need.

Again, with Steve, I believe the end justifies the means.

You don't really see David Attenborough period. Steve was a 'superstar', and he capitalised on his star status to support and promote his ideals.

He was continually buying a SHITLOAD of natural habitat all over the world with no plans to do anything with it other then let it remain in tact.
