allow me
1. about schmidt. did you notice all those people adopting african kids after this movie came out? it had that type of effect on us. great cast. very off-type nicholson. he nailed it.
2. the bourne identity. no one says they like the book better. revived matt damon's dead career. he is yet to repay us for that. (i haven't seen the departed yet...)
3. catch me if you can. a terrible soulless movie. spielburg and hanks think way too much of themselves at this point and fail to deliver even an ounce of heart. where is the feeling?
if you've ever watched those animated jumbotron races at the ballpark where everyone is cheering for their favorite power tool and you have no idea why, you'd get an idea of what it must be like to actually care about this plot.
you think christopher walken can save a crappy screenplay? you've obviously never seen suicide kings.
i almost walked out of this movie and the only reason i didn't was because my wife was sitting still. as we left, she said the same thing to me. we never walk out on movies, but this one stunk. i could hate it all day long.

NOT CRAP
This was an excellent movie, one of Scorcese's best. Or maybe more like the old Marty. Lots of good one-liners, too. Great blend of humour and shocking scenes of violence.
Is this movie essentially a remake of Infernal Affairs?
In the credits, there is a reference to The Departed being based on this film. I haven't seen it yet, but this indicates it was intentional.

Apparantly it was based on IA but has a different ending. I haven't seen the original though.
**spoilers**
I liked it. Watched a poor sounding copy though and had to look some things up on imdb afterwards. Like the guy from Costello's crew who got shot being undercover too. And confusion about who the babys father was.
I've read there were hints of Damons character being abused by a priest but I never picked up on that. Did anyone else?
Two symbolic bits at the end seemed unneccesary. The dog shunning Damon and then the rat on the windowledge (because they were rats!).
De Niro was originally to play Costello. I like Nicholson but Bobby De would have made the character a more believable mob boss.
Anyway, Not Crap. The deaths at the end shocked the shit out of me, I don't care what anyone says.

WHAT ????!!!! Somebody just mentioned to me (on another music forum) that The Departed is based on the Hong Kong movie
Infernal Affair !!!
I didn't know that !!! Well, I haven't seen that Hong Kong movie...
Infernal Affair has 3 parts, does this mean that The Departed will be dragging to 2 more sequels ????
I MUST watch that HK movie ASAP !!!!

Krist...took me forever to get from Netflix, but in the end it's nothing amazing or particularly memorable. Not crap, wf 7.
SPOILERS
------------------------
Definitely "meh". Okay ending but I vaguely knew about it. The rat thing was stupid. Nicholson was out of place. DeCraprio's panic throughout was hilarious. Baldwin rules. The pregnancy plot felt pointless. I loved Winstone's tough guy stuff but I couldn't figure out what fucking accent he was trying to pull off. Dropkick Murphys, what the fuck??

it is a watchable film; while watching it with my homepiece we're like "oh yeah this is good," "what a good movie," etc. the whole time i sort of felt like i was lying to both myself and my partner though. come to find out a day later, he didn't really enjoy it that much either. good performances, just... i dunno... i didn't feel particularly impressed, though i desperately wanted to be. so, crap, waffle 9 for being watchable once (two times max).
