According to legend, the comic was created by a woman, so that made it alright I guess.
Its not very subtle though.
Its a bit like 'Uhhh, we want to be a tad controversial, so we've chosen a name that British feminist can get upset about', but hey, they were practically lads back then.

nonsense: I met Steve before Rapeman existed, he was a strapping full grown man. He was shaving and everything. Could drive a car from chicago to michigan, or as far as Boston.
Seriously, he was at least 24-25. (hes a couple of years older than me, that's how I know these things.)

Thirty Odd Foot Of Grunts
has to be the all time worst band name ever (and in the running for all time worst band)
Oh yeah, and 'Bleeding Through'.

So we must be basically the same age.
In my experience you can still be pretty laddish at the age of 25.
Seriously though. I remember in 88, when I had just moved to Berlin and our glorious Radio 100 still existed, they did a feature on Rapeman and there was this story about them having trouble to find appropiate venues in the UK and they've probably made that up, but bandmebers were quoted as being surprised about this and claiming that they meant no harm and that they just want to 'rock'. Back then I thought to myself, well naming yourself Rapeman and the complaining that not everyone in Britain is happy about it, is a bit like building a house without the roof and then complaining that the rain gets in.

Yes.
I thought the stupid name detracted from a shit-hot band. The name should never get in the way...

They existed before I started going to gigs, but at least posthumously the name has never detracted from my enjoyment of their music. Picketing notwithstanding, I don't think the name impeded their gigs or records. And they did not break up over it either. It sounded more like a UK music rag invented fuss.

Wait! That is the science fiction ska band name that I made up years ago, but never used because I absolutely hate ska! Did someone actually use that?
Actually, though, mine was Battleska Skalactiska.
