just finally watched the video.
i dunno, as much as i hate to dwell on something like this, for fear of aligning myself with the hard copy/gossip culture we live in, richards was very obviously being a repugnant cunt face. and an unfunny one at that!
i'm sure the guys in the audience deserved a good counter-heckle, but calling them "niggers" as a form of harder-core-than-thou oneupmanship was the worst thing he could have possibly done, and for more than one reason.
all of sudden the clip of andy kaufman fucking with richards on live national tv seems that much more amazing.

possibly something's got him under some pressure and he just freaked out. I'd be somehow surprised if he were really that nutzo, but who knows.

Part of me wonders of Richards was going for the Lenny Bruce effect -- "let's say the forbidden word and show how silly and pathetic it is" -- but if he was, he failed miserably. He just comes off sounding like he's crazy, pissed-off and maybe a little loaded. A little sad, but mostly just fucked-up.
