If you haven't heard this one, check it out. For some reason, it always gets overlooked. Side 2 falls off a bit, but side 1 is absolutely relentless, featuring "When Seasons Change," my favorite Curtis track ever; "Billy Jack," a proto-gangsta ghetto funk extravaganza; and one of his prettiest love songs, "So in Love." It may not be his best, but it is definitely my favorite among his studio recordings.
Curtis Live, of course, is his finest hour.

'This Is My Country' by (Curtis Mayfield and) the Impressions absolutely kills.

I've been listening to a Mayfield comp to soothe the itch. Mostly Impressions era. Also this comp of Brazilian funky soul called Black Rio--not perfect, but some amazing moments. The pelvis thrusts involuntarily when I put it on.

I absolutely adore Curtis Mayfield, but I had no idea his music could animate the decomposed corpse of Elvis Presley. Go, Curtis!

Brett, you've seen Short Eyes, right? all of you should rent it. Curtis Mayfield has a small part in it, plays this really vigilant inmate -- a reformed man. it's the one of best "black films" i've seen. there are some very funny performances in it -- just really intense/disturbing histrionics done right, on top of the grim subject matter. and prisons then, they were very colorful, at least this one was. a lot of greens and organges and yellows -- like a poorly light gymnasium full of hostility.
hey, what's the eaforums address to send sound files to? as a christmas present i'll toss a couple good tracks your way -- there's this one, by The Montclairs that's really been bowling me over. again and again. just really over the top without being corny.
merry christmas, etc. don't do anything you'll regret.

I vote for Curtis Mayfield, either Curtis or Superfly.
I also like:
Gil Scott Heron
Sly and the Family Stone
And if you haven't got any prime era Stevie Wonder then i would highly recommend, e.g. Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life.

You know, it seems that the books refer to the '70s as music culture wasteland, in which punk filled the void. In retrospect, its not true. Soul proliferated (I haven't seen a recommendation in this thread that I disagree with), funk, prog-rock, disco (whether you like it or not), hard rock and even rap all had roots in this decade.
And it makes you think, what has really happened since? Hair metal? Grunge? Nu-metal?
Boogie on, Reggae Woman.
