Pay money for distribution and exposure? Every band in the world that has minimal-to-no-backing except for their own pockets does this.
Sorry. It seemed like a good deal, and not unlike any other time we have contributed music and money to a collective comp (not managed by strangers), except for the fact that it was attached to a media vehicle that had the potential for decent exposure.
$300? Oh shit. I guess we could have made posters, or supplemented flyers, or paid a booking agent to spot for shows.
It's not the money loss, ultimately, that's being reacted to here.
It's the bullshit.

The mag:
* * *
I just want to say that I am not pissed - it is more about live and learn.
I will say that between this thread and a shitload of PM's, it seems like the people that run this mag, the associated label and a booking agency are decent folks, but maybe a little stretched thin trying to do too much.
I will go buy the latest issue myself. I may even buy future issues. I am not holding anything against anyone. I just dont think I would associate myself with them on a business level in the future.

As far as i know it's one dude. And yeah, he's always seemed to be a pretty decent and top-shelf guy. But yeah, could be trying to do too much; who knows.

I can't say I've ever written a check to anyone to promote, distribute, or "expose" any bands I've been in.
This, to me, is an arguably much different scenario. "Pay us money and we'll put your band on a comp". I sure wouldn't bother.

I think this happens all the time. I am regularly solicited to pay to be on a Magnet comp. I consider it each time.

dude I knew it.
He's a good guy. I like him. and he is stretched out to the max, as he does a magazine, label, booking agency and PR all by himself. Morally and ethically he is still a top notch dude.
And actually I have done the magazine comp several times for my bands. it is a good deal. It comes in a well respected magazine that has a run of around 4,000. For $300 it's excellent exposure for a new band, because a lot of people will actually listen. With the expansion to a double disc, however it may be getting a little fat, but that's the way it is.
the pr/booking company has also done some booking and PR for me recently. In those regards, he has a lot of things going for him, but there are certain aspects that he could do better with. But fuck it nobody's perfect. Even in the way we do our own jobs, there are pluses and minuses. I'm sure if I really sat down and critiqued how we run Sick Room there would also be some bones to pick. PM me if you want the lowdown.

oh and I bet the fact that you got a 2 year old copy of the magazine from Amazon was probably more their fault than his...
