It's weird. I ran sound at this big casino for awhile (yeah, I know), and the house budget would only cover 1 operator...cool. However, the monitor desk was in the room backstage. No cue wedge. So, I would need a 'spotter' to stand in the doorway and let me know when the performer's mix was tuned in (roughly, I'm afraid). Then I would race the 80-or-so feet back to FOH and try to dial that in as fast as I could. Then, when I was fine-tuning the sound of yet another rousing rendition of 'Brick House' for all the attendees (read: drunken casino trash, except on Asian Night), I would inevitably have to stop and claw my way through the crowd, sneak around the performers onstage, and try to guess what the monitor issues were (cued as they were by wild gesticulation on the part of at least one performer, while the song was being played...), and fix them before the mad dash back to FOH...etc. Repeat ad nauseum, throughout the night in some cases.

This was a huge space, and they had plenty of money. Good grief. You would think that some common sense would apply...

UPDATE:::::::

So I walked into the bar.

I saw the mixing board. Out on the floor. Where Tekken 5 used to be. Where I said they should put it.

I said, "so... walkie talkies didn't work out, huh?"

Mr. "I went to sound school" looked at me and giggled. Retard.

He quit the bar and left the place to his partner, who just bought a new mixer. Yay!

We might be playing with Murphy's Law there in February. Hope the bar replaces the powered stage monitor HookerDragger blew up last week!
