Ok, weirdest observation: the ending minute or so of Water Is Not Enough (the one song they have available to preview off the album), I swear sounds a lot like a June of '44 song in the rhythm section, especially right before they pound out the heavy stuff.

the new record is good - but not breaking any new ground for them. i mean, it sounds exactly like you'd expect it to - like a neurosis record. so whlie it's rad as fuck, it doesn't quite knock you on yr ass when they did the same thing. but i can't emphasize enough how them doing the same thing is still way better than anything else out there.

but yeah, like someone else mentioned, 'given to the rising' is closest in feel to their "classics" - "through silver in blood" and "times of grace".

btw, for the record, i thought "times of grace" was the one everyone went apeshit for...?

Yeah, Times of Grace is a fans favourite.

Whilst the new record might not break new ground for them it's not simply just a repeat of their mid to late 90s material. It combines that heavier sound with the sonic advancement of their last album, thus equalling something new but without really breaking that new ground...is a muddled paragraph of what I think.

that's not a bad description of the new record - except it doesn't quite have the dark brutality of 'through silver in blood' or the churning angst of 'times of grace'. nothing that quite blasts out like 'the doorway' on times of grace.

still damn good though, and a lot less meandering than their last, but also damn good record.
