It's like there's an expected behavior among scenesters there, and anything that shakes that behavior is shunned or looked down upon.
To play devil's advocate, dude, i've seen this same shit in Milwaukee. Lots of it.
Fair enough, but over the last 12 years I've managed to surround myself with different groups of people who love dressin' up goofy, spittin' beer and hollarin at bands. Such behavior tends to frighten/annoy Chicagoans.
I'd argue the exact opposite...but I'm only speaking for Madisonians. Chicago is louder man...Chicago don' give a fuck about you. The amount of ribbing I took at the last Bear Claw show (in a practice space behind a dark alley with some kind of "ethnic" scuffle that ensued while I was talking with someone in Imperial Battlesnake) greatly out-hassled my entire Madison experience.
Some lesbian(?) type told me to "stop acting like a girl," for passing the bowl the wrong way
one time and some drunk dude would give me shit just for passing him the piece (that he wanted). All in good fun, but Chicago is hard...Milwaukee has Pitchfork pussy shit like Terrior Bute and the Box Social...but I'll be learnin' more about Mil-town in the coming days...
