I guess I just assumed that they started producing them in '72.

I have a reissue custom which I really like a lot.

I've tried a Tele Custom made in Japan from the 80's. It sounded great, really very different from mine, I asumed it was becuase it had the proper WR humbucker. But I've since been told that they don't.

The MIJ ones are far less heavily laquered than the MIM ones, as a result they seem to resonate nicer, from the few that I've tried. They just feel lighter and more 'alive' too.
I am a geek.

I was really tempted by the MIJ. The only problem was that the guy wanted £480 for it. It was lighter and 'more alive' as you say... but I am not enough of a geek to know if 480 is too much - it seemed so at at the time. Also the wear on the guitar seemed forced - almost too perfectly worn, like some-one had made an effort to "vintage" it. Very nice though.

If you think you are a geek you need to go visit some Keith Richards fan sites! Seriously these people talk about buying the MIJ (for the reasons you've mentioned), stripping them of everything and rebuilding them with vintage pickups, pots and even tuners for a C'77 Keef sound. Your 'geek' is pretty mild by comparison.

Oooh, never go higher than £350 for a second hand reissue of anything.
