I did your mom in a day.

BadComrade wrote:I just read the liner notes:

"The back cover of the 1969 LP edition of Oar cites a single recording date for all twelve songs, December 16*. In all probability, Spence was back on his bike (motorcycle) by then."

"According to the official artist-contract cards in the Columbia archives, Spence recorded 28 pieces of music in six days, between December 3 and December 12; he sang; played bass, drums and all the guitars; and produced the album, mostly with the assistance of one Columbia staff engineer, Mike Figlio.

-snip-

... there is no doubting Spence's diligence and prodigious inspiration. He taped no less than 18 different tracks on his final day of recording*, including Oar's original, harrowing climax, the nine-and-a-half minute, bass-drums-and-vocal prayer, "Grey / Afro".

*These things, which were stuck in my brain, are what made me say that it was done in one day.

Looks like it took almost as long for you to write "I was wrong" than it took for Skip Spence to record his great album, Oar.

Reading the liner notes to Oar is time well spent.

I love that album so much.

I've never heard this album - but I'd be keen on doing your mom for 20 bucks in my favor. She can reach me on this board.

Thanks.

She'd probably try to stick it in her snatch like she did that one time I asked her to hold my eggbeater*.

Oh, and even my mom has some standards. She'd never do a guy who wears silicone bracelets like you do:

Not to mention, you can't pick a hooker up on a 10 speed.

Well. Played. Cheers.

Though a 10 speed is a perfectly acceptable vehicle to pick a hooker up on....just not to do anything with them.

Where are these other great Skip Spence albums referred to earlier?

the first two Moby Grape records and the first Jefferson Airplane album?

What instrument did he play in the Airplane? I knew there was some kind of link.

Incredibly, I haven't heard any Moby Grape, and the only version of "Omaha" I've heard was the Golden Palominos (?) version. If'n someone sees any Grape tunes out on the internets, let me know where I could find it. It sounds like I might like it, but SF in that period was kinda sketchy, in my opinion.

He drumbled for the Plane and sang/handle guitar for the Grape

I am no lover of the Plane, but the Grape was great

Listening to Oar on the train going through the Rockies was one of my favorite musical experiences

I suspect Will Oldham has listened to Oar. A lot.
