18" speakers?

I don't remember my svt having a switch on the back for ohms - and i've never had to worry about it before as i've only used 4ohm cabs. i thought it wasn't a problem to plug into a highter rated cab - it just won't be as loud, right...? ideally, i'd like to run everything at nominal impedance.

re: hhig - yeah, they still fucking rule. the stuff holds up real well. of course, nothing tops uoa or unwound. i gotta say, i really dig tragedy though - it's not as over the top as hhig - but they were damn good. that first record is fantastic...

well, the people on the acoustic forum are recommending that i re-cone the cerwin vega. however, the people on the acoustic site tend to be very biased and more than a little clueless. some advice received there: "don't blow up speakers" and my favorite, "why do you have to play so loud? jaco only turned up to 2". god, fuck that.

my question is, if i recone it - wont i just blow it again? also - 18"s are hard to come by and someone was saying the ideal usable frequency on an 18" for bass would be up to 2.5 - most 18s seem to be made for pa use and only go to 800.

here are some 18"s i found:
www.usspeaker.com/eightee...1400-1.htm
www.usspeaker.com/SigmaPro-18-1.htm
www.usspeaker.com/EVX%20180B-1.htm

also - thoughts on running the svt at 8ohms?

anyways. the dudes on the acoustic site are pissing me off so much i'm thinking of selling the damn thing. it's spent more time broken than it has worked. first the cab shook so hard it rattled the solders loose in the head so i had to have that fixed. then it rattled the screws holding the back port on. now the speaker has blown. i'm very close to throwing in the towel and getting the mesa loaded w 2x15 evs. if only the 301 cab didn't look so damn beautiful.

Verbs and Nouns wrote:Yeah, the dudes on the acoustic site are kinda annoying. and not really that helpful. I was postying on there, but they don't really get stuff.

that sir, is the understatement of the year. makes me want to sell all my acoustic gear. it is perhaps one of the most trainspotting, navel gazing, closed-minded, least-helpful web boards i've ever been on.
they definitely, most certainly don't understand the kind of music any of us listen to, let alone play. and none of them are active, gigging musicians. seriously. go over and look and my post. the responses are driving me crazy. not helpful the slightest - and boy do they not get stuff.

yeah, tell me about it. totally useless. the worst is the guy who is trying to restart the acoustic brand name.

but no, that's not a stupid question as i have no idea what you mean by that.
please explain what i should do and be looking for. the thing is definitely fucked tho - almost no sound comes out and what little sounds it makes are thin and distorted.

those eminence, ev and eighteens are looking mighty nice right now, what with thier 600+ wattage...

Anyway, this is a dumb question, but did you check the leads to the cone?

i don't have the cab in front of me, but i don't remember there being anything unusual or wrong w/ the wiring. we couldn't see anything wrong w/ the speaker in general - it's super cheap to re-cone those, only $95. so i'll do it, just in case i want to resell it. but i'm definitely going to keep blowing a 300 watt speaker. that carvin you linked loooks fairly sweet, but so do these eminence:

http://www.speakerrepair.com/Merchant2/ ... +700W-800W

and yeah. once again, just to say it: fuck the acoustic forum.
