You are almost guaranteed to hate it on first listen. As Matt Groening said "anyone who says they loved it the first time is lying."

It will grow to be a very satisfying listen as you "learn" the album and it's style. I think that Beefheart had no peers in his time and has had none since.

So true. First time I heard it, I was like, "Why?" Then one day it hit me in the face like a cold fish.

I like "Lick My Decals..." a bit better. Maybe it is less daunting of a task or something. But yeah, "Trout Mask Replica" is one of those records you'll learn to love.

Eye-opening. Mind-boggling. Cliche-inducing. Best place to start when facing their discography I think. By "Bloody Revolutions," if you haven't killed yourself during "Shaved Women," you're hooked.

Government Issue- You

I dunno...the sound was impeccable, as were the hooks. They struck a really good balance on that one, between muscular riff hard rock, anglophile pop and got further into some of the psychadelai they'd been hinting at on previous records.

Underrated as all hell, and damn near perfect as an album.
You call me a hater like that's a bad thing

People always say that and it makes no sense to me. If you're receptive and open-minded about stuff at all you will not hate this record on first listen. First time I heard it, I knew it was for life. It's my #1, too.
