Have any of you that say the drunk driving laws are too harsh been charged with them?

I don't think they are too harsh
and I was charged with a DUI

it sucked
it cost me a ton of money
and hell yeah its harsh
but ya know what
i will never ever make the mistake again
ever
there are plenty of things you can do to avoid driving under the influence
walk, take a cab, wait til your sober
there is no excuse

Yeah, but say you've drank two beers, and are completely cabable of driving, and do drive, and your blood alcohol level is higher than the arbitrarily imposed limit, which may even have been your case, don't you think getting fucked in the ass is a bit steep of a price to pay?

The penalties if you kill or injure someone while driving drunk are SEVERE as it is. You are going to prison for a long time if you hurt or kill someone while drunk driving, that's fine. Keep it that way, shit increase those if you people are so gung ho on destroying people who make stupid mistakes once and awhile.
But to be pulling people out of their cars and into jail in the middle of the night because the fucking test the cops created themselves says they had half a beer too many? Or smoked a joint last week?
That's some fucked up shit right there, right up there on the insanity meter next to throwing someone in prison for having weed in their pocket.

I have a good friend who blew one tiny point above their ever lowering limit one night at 3am after a show, this was almost 5 years ago..he's still going to court and paying fines and trying to get his shit back.
They took his car, threw him in jail, fined him thousands of dollars.
All because he drank like 4 beers over the course of 2 hours and drove home.

and you don't think the penelties are too severe?
When you hear the buzz word 'drunk driver' you think some lunatic weavign all over running over mailboxes....99.9% of the time that is not what it is. It's a person like me or you who got trapped into the fucking cocksucking cops crooked ass unfair web of bullshit.
It's all about stealing money people, that's it.
The more you people fall for their stupid scare tactics, the further you allow them to take things, the further they will push it...hence the new weed tests on the side of the road.
The cops might as well start wearing full on pirate costumes instead of their stupid boy scout outfits they wear now, that's all they are.

first of all, not everyone on the planet drives drunk or even tipsy. some of us sober up first or catch a ride with someone else. i have never been unable to find someone sober who could drive me home--and in the past it's happened A LOT since i'm allergic to the booze. and actually a lot of the time folks would also pick me back up at home the next morning and take me to my car wherever i left it.

second, maybe chicago really is a corrupt place... because i have lots of friends who were arrested on DUIs and none of them had their lives and finances RUINED on a first offense. did they get taken to jail for a few hours? sure. community service? yup. a boot on their car for a few months? yup. a moderate fine? yes indeed. a really funny mugshot on the sheriff's website? hellz yes! do i think any of this is an over reaction? nope. it's a deterrent. and seriously, if this doesn't teach you a lesson... i hope you enjoy strike two.

marsup, i understand we are coming from two different places considering that i don't want to shoot a cop in the head, but i don't think a person should have to hurt or kill someone before they are penalized. and i'm talking a bigger penalty than just getting a ticket.

but again, maybe chicago is just more fucked up when it comes to penalizing drunk drivers. someone still dealing with a first offense issue 5 years after the fact is a little insane. believe me, i understand it's all a money grab. i had my license suspended for a 1 1/2 years over the first, and to date, only ticket i've ever received in 11+ years of driving--this being a $11 ticket for a broken headlight--and had to pay $200.

so long story short, shit is wack b. but folks really need to be more heads up about driving tipsy. it sort of drives me a little bit crazy when friends send mass e-mails alerting us on where and when they are doing those scheduled sobriety stops (you know, when they check every car). it's all "don't get caught! avoid this road!" rather than "don't drive drunk dumbass."

no.
we know what the limit is
it's not a mystery
you should be aware of yourself enough to know
"i shouldn't drive now because if i get pulled over i'll be over the limit"
or you know,
"i might be impaired and hurt someone"

either one

simple as that.

What about, "I'm not impaired, so I know I won't hurt anyone, but I might be over the legal limit, so, since I might get fucked in the ass, I won't drive."?

That's the situation I would encounter more often, if I had a car. In either case you propose, I agree with you, you should not drive.

Whatever, it all does suck though. Some people will be unjustly penalized, some will be unjustly unpenalized. The only way it could be fair is if everything were judged on a situatinal basis, which will never happen and would open new doors to lack of fairness if it did.

I heard that the cops in Wisconsin came up with a good trick a few years back. The story goes that they put a sign about a mile down the road from an off-ramp, that read:

"SLOW DOWN

DRIVER SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT AHEAD"

Then they waited at the off-ramp for the drunks to exit the highway. Supposedly, this tactic resulted in a significantly higher ratio of arrests.

I still don't think it sucks or is unjust.
I would say a very large portion of people that have a drivers
license know (or should) that driving under the influence
could either
a. hurt someone
b. get you arrested

you know what you have to do to avoid that
if you choose not to, and you
a. hurt someone
b. get arrested

how is that unjust?
you can't blame anyone other than yourself.

I know everyone likes to say to themselves they can drink after a couple beers
maybe
but lets say you had a couple of beers
and you killed someone
are you telling me you wouldn't think to yourself
"if i was sober maybe this wouldn't have happened"?
