22Cold and beautiful. Like Jodie Foster.
Weird. The ice fishers are always thick on the lakes here.
I haven't been able to ice fish in years, short of either taking my life into my own hands or heading way the fuck "Up Nort."

Oh, there are definitely fishermen out on the lakes at some point of the winter. However, the lakes are freezing later and later in the season each year and the ice thickness/cover is getting to be questionably safe in many cases. I remember having a discussion with my dad about taking the boat out on one of my favourite lakes around xmas of last year, as the lake was completely open.
The absolute worst is when I see little old Hmong men fishing on the Fox River, and there's about 50 feet of ice sheet which appears to be a scant few inches thick and the rest is open, flowing water. Why anyone would fish in the Fox River is beyond me, but why one would also risk their life for toxic carp...jesus.

most of them in the Neenah/Appleton do not know any better, they have started posting signs in Hmong in this area alerting folks about the toxic levels of PCBs...

My parents own a fishing resort in Canada; we could have an Electrical forum ice fishing getaway where little fishing is done but long-winded arguments about the term porn star are had.
Madison is cold and dark like...well I'll leave that to Rog. Tomorrow we are penciled in for a shit storm and judging by my 45 minute wait in line at the EXPRESS lane at the grocery store that means the apocalypse is coming. There were at least ten people in line buying nothing but cases of bottled water. While waiting my turn I began to feel like I wasn't in on the joke with my frozen pizza and chicken pot pies.

27The Pacific NW coast is due to get absolutely hammered in the next few days. It was mild today, but over the weekend some snow accumulation is expected. Then early next week there is a massive storm system that has absorbed the energy of two typhoons and is going to come ashore with sustained 80-90 mph winds, triggering the first official "hurricane winds" warning anyone can remember up here. I've got batteries, clean water, firewood, two battery-operated lanterns and fruit, nuts, rice milk, cereal and jerky. Last winter we lost power for the best part of two days, and this is going to be worse. Jeez, I hope I don't get called out in the middle of it. I may just have to tell the hospital/nursing home/police dispatcher to put a quarter in the deceased and I'll come out when there isn't debris flying through the air at 90 miles per hour.
