Rimbaud III wrote:Ethics and morality are for girly-men. You should have dispensed with a little Lee Marvin-esque ball busting when it really mattered.
You are not worthy of taking what's yours now.
Just think about that for a bit.
damn. this thread has reminded me how bad ass Lee Marvin was. Awesome.
Yeah, take the money.

Unless I was in a tight spot and really needed the money, I'd politely decline it. Too much time has passed and what's done is done. If you want to forgive the band on your own, then that's great. But forgiving them because they pooled together money this late is an empty gesture at this point in time and I'd feel like my soul and my forgiveness was being bought by taking it. Of course this is just my limited perspective on the situation. I wouldn't blame you if you took it at all.
Now, if I needed to make rent or I really, really wanted to play in a WSOP bracelet event this year, my attitude might shift.

finally. i think you're blowing this question up into an ethical one when really it's your own conscience that seems to need the guidance.
you're owed the money. taking it has NOTHING to do with ethics, it's simply a contractual obligation being fulfilled, however late.
how you feel about this because these were old friends of yours is something different.

I sugest you take the money, if that bothers you, still take the money, and give it to the first down and out homeless bum that asks you for cash.
Think about how much that would make a bums day...
"do you have any money"
"Yes, Yes I do, $900 infact, and you can have it"
some would say you should give it to charity, however I think to a charity $900 is no big deal, however in the hands of one homeless man $900 is a HUGE deal.

It sounds as if you long ago resigned yourself to this loss. I would say don't press the need for the money and if they do indeed give it to you then all should be forgiven. Should the band pay you your due then it means that they feel bad for shafting you and though it is overdue you were not forgotten.

Yeah, but if these guys weren't ethical from the get-go, I would accept the money and never deal with them again. How could you not remain forever wary of such an outfit (even if you
wanted to forgive them completely)? They abused a friendship...CRAP.

I agree with the advice to accept it and do something cool with it.
Buy a ridiculously cool turntable, and a record cleaning machine.
Go rent a shiny new Hummer for a day and take it out mudding (get the insurance).
Open Pollstar and pick a random show outside of your area, and fly out to see a band you love in a cool venue you have never been to....
Maybe buy a coffee, a donut, and $897 in quick-pick lotto tickets from the little convenience mart.
Turn the crappy story you hated telling into a really interesting story everyone wants you to repeat everytime you see them.

It's your money.
Take it. I wouldn't be overly grateful for it. Just tell 'em you appreciate them making good on their debt.
