I'll second this. I've made the mistake of renting from U-Haul twice when moving, and both times I got a vehicle that was a total piece of shit and genuinely dangerous. Try Ryder instead -- costs more, but trust me, it's worth every penny.

The only place that I would worry about the weather is around Albuquerque. Travel can be precarious in that area this time of the year. And take ubercat's advice and be very careful crossing Texas. It's amazing how many traffic stops you'll see in Texas. Seems like that's all they do there.
BTW, I'm assuming that you'll be traveling on I-44/40. Make sure you have plenty of money for tolls in Oklahoma. I believe that it cost me an additional $30 in tolls to cross Oklahoma (in a UHaul.)

I would also suggest that you bring a full can of gas with you. There are long stretches of nothing between Amarillo and Albuquerque where gas stations are few and far between. Good Luck and Enjoy!

I must have been lucky. I moved from Seattle to St Louis last January, I rented a UHaul and had no complaints other than the amount of gas that it took and the truck's lack of a CD player. My trip was made extra long by a snow storm that forced me to drive to Bakersfield along the Southern route. No horror stories other than the awful Spanish polka/country that was on the radio in California.

It's in the mountains, so expect snow. I drove through Albuquerque in January of this year. There was snow/sleet in the higher elevations, but it was passable. You'll be fine.

Also, I don't know how I thought we could avoid driving through Texas. I just looked at the route.

Wishful thinking, I guess.

pay the under 25 fee (well, you have to if you want the car).
pay the additional driver fee.
buy the insurance unless your current auto insurance can swing it.

if you get in an accident, have the hertz insurance and another driver was at the wheel, they'll deny yr claim. i don't think it's worth the risk, esp. if someone is injured.
