A well written song is a well written song. If it doesn't translate into a solo acoustic version, it was probably not a good song to begin with. That said, if the artist in question over-emotes, it'll be crap. Quiet introspective versions are usually pretty decent. Think Hugh Cornwell doing "Skin Deep".

I'd rather hear Frankie Stubbs doing an acoustic rendition of "Bowl of Flies" than fucking "punk rock versions" of Simon and Garfunkle ala The Dickies or some such nonsense.

Good point (ah Leatherface...where are you now?) It's a more interesting concept than translating a quiter song with noisier dynamics. The trouble with acoustic guitars though is that as soon as you hear one on a rock record you know that the sentiments are going to be particularly....heartfelt. If done right, then ace (I'm thinking Grant Hart with Signed D.C.), if not then you're veering towards cigarette lighters in the air...

but anyhow if the existence of schmaltzy acoustic guitar music is "the price we have to pay" for the few solid acoustic guitar artists we have been able to listen to (cash, those 2 bob marley songs, john lennon, syd barrett, leonard cohen, that nirvana unplugged concert, etc...), thats fine by me. nobody says you have to listen to the james blunt / OAR / dave matthews / dispatch / john mayer / jack johnson section, just like nobody says you have to listen to electric schmaltz either.

well, i suppose you do have to listen to that music if you're at a place you can't really leave just yet, and that music starts playing, and you're not in the position to turn it off. yea, that sucks.
