A well written song is a well written song. If it doesn't translate into a solo acoustic version, it was probably not a good song to begin with. That said, if the artist in question over-emotes, it'll be crap. Quiet introspective versions are usually pretty decent. Think Hugh Cornwell doing "Skin Deep".
I'd rather hear Frankie Stubbs doing an acoustic rendition of "Bowl of Flies" than fucking "punk rock versions" of Simon and Garfunkle ala The Dickies or some such nonsense.
