Pretty sure they have a matched pair of these.

i noticed there are no Neumann U87 in the equipment list...
most big ass studio own a bunch of them... why not EA ?
just curious
I recall an interview with Steve some years back where he described the sound of the U87 as "whiney."

I sang through one once, b/c it happened to be up at Chicago Recording Company, and I sounded like Billy Corgan through it. Which is not normal.
The U48 at EA is the best mic I've ever used for my voice, however.
Maybe there was something wrong with the U47. Or me.

26You know all those insanely young female R&B singers? The ones that don't have surnames? They ALL have this weird nasal harshness. Do they train them to sing that way, or is it something to do with engineers on autopilot putting up U87s in front of anything with a mouth? The ubiquity of the U87/Neve combination on singers is baffling to me, because I've never heard one that didn't sound better with another combination.
Don't shun it. Fun it.

27I recorded a band with a female vocalist. They rented a neve preamp and a Neuman U87. I was really excited. The results didn't sound as good as my AKG C 4000B through a mid grade Focusrite preamp. I guess the moral of the story is a vintage golden hammer doesn't do what a cheap set of needle nose pliers does.

The Neve mic pre amp is the most over hyped piece of gear ever. They can sound amazing on certain sources but are by no means as magical as everyone makes them out to be and can actually sound crappy on certain sources. On vocals I usually prefer something less colored and more modern. Unless I'm going for something vintage or lofi.
But when someone brings one and pays good money to rent it then it's going to be hard to talk them out of "hearing" the Neve as being better.

I agree. I love it on bass amps and guitar amps. Not that big a fan on acoustics or drum ambience, for example. And I have found 1073s I really liked and others I didn't want to use. To be expected with old gear.

If you sounded like Corgan through it, then I'd be curious to hear what Corgan sounds like through it.
