Hmmm, 14-18 for me was '84-'88. Plenty of embarrassing stuff being sold to kids during those years. That puts me in the south side of Chicago listening to Metallica, Guns and Roses, Ozzy. I remember seeing Ozzy and Metallica at UIC. Cliff Burton was awesome and Ozzy's guitarist vomited during his solo. They took him away in an ambulance. Great show. Lars needs someone to give him a mushroom bruise and shut the fuck up. What a tool.

I was in to a lot of cheesy punkcore bands like the Unseen. And the Exploited. Gross.

Around the same time I was starting to discover some decent stuff too, so I don't feel that bad.

A couple of these clowns I might've kicked to the curb by the time I turned thirteen, but these are the most egregious offenders I can think of:

1. Kansas
2. Styx
3. The Exploited
4. Triumph
5. The Boomtown Rats

In High school I liked a ton of stuff that I heard from being a skater kid.

punk, like Ramones, X and the Germs, etc.
then
hardcore, lots of it.
Minor Threat, Black Flag, Die Kruezen, Cro-Mags, Crumbsuckers, DRI, MDC, Christ on Parade, Mob47, BGK, Rudimentary Peni, Th'Inbred (WVA!!)
then speed/death metal
Slayer, Venom, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Metal Church

then punk/hardcore again, but the Dischord positive shit (for like a month) and some crap on Wishingwell Records (ugh..) like Youth of Today, Uniform Choice and Underdog (alright, Underdog were OK). This era was short.

then SST stuff like Husker Du, Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Das Damen and Dinosaur before they were Dinosaur Jr. I'm not sure how it fits in, but very very early U2, Joy Division, Pylon, Honor Role, Gang Of Four, Squirrel Bait, fIREHOSE and Bad Brains (I heard I Against I before any other BBrains album- I thought it was like the Van Halen of hardcore).

In high school during these times (87-91) it was really cool to like "college rock" stuff like the Bodeans, Guadacanal Diary and REM. Disillusioned metal head kids liked Jane's Addiction (meh) Pop metal was all the rage and all the skater kids liked Death/Speed metal. Not many people I knew liked diverse things as much as I did. High School seemed like it was all about fitting some niche idea; metalheads, punks, hardcore kids, straight edge, whatever. There was no Nirvana, and metalhead kids wouldn't be caught dead admitting to liking the Sex Pistols or Bad Brains..

I especially knew that the Cure, Bauhaus, Jane's Addiction and NIN were garbage, but I "tolerated" it. I even saw Skinny Poopie live.

More baffling was seeing Jesus Lizard open up for Sonic Youth and not really "getting it" and then two years later early in college they were my favorite band. I remember them selling the 7 vs. 8 single and I even think Steve ran sound at the show. I don't think Goat was out yet...

I went to band camp in sixth or seventh grade and all the people who I thought were "the cool kids" had Korn shirts for every day of the week. I decided I had heard one song on the radio and had really liked it. Then I quickly became obsessed with them. I even had a shitty geocities web page dedicated to them. The best part though was that I was not allowed to have any of their cds. I listened to that crap through streaming realplayer.

nirvana, radiohead, pearl jam, pumpkins, portishead, the who, beck. the usual suspects.

i was convinced at the ages of 12-15 that radiohead were by far and away the best band ever.

In Utero and Incesticide have stood the test of time in my opinion.

Those are two great records.
