Being an only child

I have a theory about only children. While most people are some combination of social and solitary impulses, most are much more comfortable being one or the other. In my experience, only children are--much more than other people--both extremely social and extremely solitary; they require both in equally intense measures.

Also, every only child I know has been an artist of some sort.

Thanks, y'all--I'm glad you like that poem. It was begun in the Himalayas in a hashish-induced haze and was originally entitled (cringe) "My Nemesis, My Twin." I renamed and reworked it upon my stateside return, and it became the first poem in what I soon recognized as my "mature" style. Fuck, it's gotta be fifteen years old by now.

By the way, I'm still not sure how to vote. A lot of things I value about myself I can attribute to having been an only child, but I wouldn't wish it on any kid of mine. And the older I get--and the older my parents get--the scarier it becomes.
