I like Bassmans and Super Reverbs. Even the early CBS/Silverface models sound fine to me. The Bassman 75 was my "clean" amp I used a while ago when I was using an A/B pedal to move between Hiwatt DR103 overdrive and a clean sound.
Twins are too difficult to get to the sweet spot, and that sweet spot is often too loud to be useful (or in some cases, not loud enough)
I find most Fender products, including the vintage stuff to be highly inconsistent as far as QC goes. You have to give each item a fairly rigorous run through or you risk wasting a ton of $.

22guys, and what do you think about the new reissues?

I haven't tried the re-issues but I will be in a guitar store this weekend I am sure...

A bandmate has a Super Reverb. I'm not so wild about this amp, but he employs it poorly anyway, I think. To me, the reverb can be too "coily" sounding if you're playing on even a warmed up bridge pickup. If you throw in a midrange overdrive or distortion, you're going to sound very shrill. You can't help but jangle. You don't even need a delay for false introspection. I hate that sound. Lovely headroom though. My thoughts about this amp could quite possibly be very different if I had a week to figure out whether I could get to the sweetspot for a sound to my liking.
I want to hear what you have to say about this, Yale.

25Well just because yr amp got reverb don't mean you gots to use it.
Anyway, depending on your need for volume and headroom (not the same thing!), I think the Deluxe, Pro, and Super Reverbs are just about the best amps ever made, the original blackface ones especially, and early silverface. I don't know about the reissues.
I wouldn't bother with a Twin, and I don't know why anybody plays one who's not on some mega rock tour. You can't get them loud enough to really get the tubes into their sweet spot. Even more of a problem recording. Who needs 80 watts? 40 is plenty plenty plenty loud, unless a hint of distortion kill you. But, uh, you're into the jesus lizard and all those other bands so why am I even asking?

FYI, The Super Six is not a Super Reverb with 6 speakers, it's a Fender Twin/Showman Reverb head in a 6x12" speaker cab.
Good sounding amp that is really loud, but man, do you really want to lug the thing around when doing a show?
They have 6 10" speakers, not 6 12" speakers. The Quad Reverb had 4 12" speakers. Both are beasts.
I saw one in a Pawnshop about ten years ago and that one definately had 6 12" speakers, with casters on the side of it. --BIG amp.

Then it was modded.....somehow..............they never made them with twelves, they were going bigger and experimenting but they were not smoking crack. 6 12's ? No way, not from the factory. Imagine a twin, then imagine a twin with 4 12's? That was the quad reverb. Any bigger would be absurd and would not sell very well as far as 12's go.

28ANYTHING but the Roc-Pro 1000 combo. That thing died a very long and agonizing death...
Is it working tonight? Yes.
Is it working right now? No.
Will it work at the show? Yes.
Will it work all the way through the show? No.
This is correct. Very, very clean, too. You can crank it in Ohio until you can hear it in Egypt and you'll still have trouble overdriving it until you hit the fuzzbox.

i just sold my marshall amplifier and i'm planning to get a fender tube amp, the thing is i'm not sure which one i should get. i'm into bands like jesus lizard, big black, rapeman, sonic youth, birthday party, dead meadow, my bloody valentine and i'm also into 60's psychedelic rock. so i'm into that style of hardcore punk but then again i'm into that 60's rock sound where clean chords and reverb come in.
please help me out here...
thanks in advance !!
A lot of the bands you have listed yous very different kinds of amps. For example...
Dead Meadow mainly uses oranges amps, and live Jason bi amps with super six or silverface twin.
My Bloody Valentine used ampeg V4s.
I think Steve used (I could be wrong, but I think it was) Fender bassman and Traynor amps.
Also you haven't said if you wanted a head or a combo.
I would go for a vintage sun, like the 100 s or the spetre, because they have reverb and have a dark sound. They also get pretty loud. You can get some pretty solid tone.
Another good amp to look at would be an Ampeg V4 or the combo of it the VT22. They have a pretty awesome overpowering tone, that only those amps make. The older models, have more of that psychedelic sound heard on a lot of albums from the 60's. They were pretty much a studio standard. The older models have a subtractive EQ, and if you don't know how to use it right, you could make the amp sound pretty goofy. The later models are far more standard, and still have an extreme amount of head room.
If you had your heart set on a fender, I would say go for a Silverface twin. They get really loud, tons of head room, and are some of the most amazing amps ever. There is a reason so meny people use them, and it is because they sound really fucking good. Also the master volume Bassman is wonderful, but it would sound a lot like a marshall, and well you just sold yours...
