I don't know if he would still be in prison for leaving the scene of- and failure to report an accident involving personal injury or death, but he most certainly would not be a senior US Senator at this time.

Drunk driving, vehicular homicide if they wanted to push it, manslaughter if not. fleeing the scene, failure to report an accident with injuries, etc...

You can get life for the crimes he committed that night.

He's a piece of shit coward and I'm glad he has cancer, he deserves it.
He didn't; even try to help that woman, they say she was probably alive in the car for quite some time.
He was worried about how it would look, so he scampered off like a fucking coward and left her to die. Real class act.

A lifetime of accomplishments for the better of the country and yet this is all you remember.

Yes, all water under the bridge

Can't a spoiled rich drunk scumbag asshole murder a young woman and use his power and money to get away with it scott free anymore in this country without having to constantly hear about it? Sheesh. That was ages ago. It was just one stupid woman, big deal. He paid her family off, isn't that enough?

If a republican did this you'd all be shitting yourselves demanding he be drawn and quartered.

I thought the inferred story was that he got out of the car before the sobriety checkpoint (because he was drunk and married) and she being sober kept driving. she wasn't familiar with the area and therefore drove off the bridge. Later to dodge the drunk driving accusation, they came up with the new story that he forgot and tried to save her a couple times.

So he not only murdered her by acting so recklessly and left her there alone injured to die, he lied and sullied her name afterwards to deflect blame away from himself.
What a great guy. Just a national treasure.

Yeah it's a shame I can't just forget all this happened and embrace him as a hero.

I don't know all the details about what happened that night, for the simple reason that I wasn't there. All the information I have to go on is the details as related in Ted Kennedy's own public accounts (which I assume to be at least somewhat sanitized), the popular allegations of recklessness and "murder", and the myriad conspiracy theories that make claims like, "She was at the Kennedy compound and she felt uncomfortable in that devil's den of iniquity, so she asked to leave. But those evil Kennedys knew she'd go to the press and tell all about the debauched, alcohol-fueled bacchanal she had witnessed, so they murdered her and covered it all up with the police!"

I believe it was an accident, and Ted Kennedy was a bit drunk, so he left the scene for fear of a big public scandal, should the police discover his drunkenness. Sure, what he did was inexcusable. He basically caused the death of another human being because of his own irresponsibility and then escaped his due justice, simply because of his family name. Of course, I don't believe that Ted Kennedy's loss of the opportunity to become president is anywhere near close to a punishment for what he did.

I know a guy who, while driving drunk and all coked up, ran a red light and got T-boned by a city garbage truck. The passenger in his car, who was a friend of mine, was killed instantly and the driver walked away unharmed. That happened about 10 years ago, and that guy is still in jail right now.

But that unfortunate incident doesn't make me want to hate Ted Kennedy for the rest of his life, and I am certainly not going to express joy over the fact that the man has malignant cancer. He has done a lot of good in his life and I'm sure that not a day goes by that he doesn't regret what happened that night. It's not like he's made a career out of ruining lives, like some others in the US Congress seem to be doing.
