Steely Dan . . .

They were listenable for their first three records, especially Can't Buy A Thrill and Pretzel Logic. They downright sound like a band on those albums, and while it was a style that became ubiquitous, it sounds pretty fresh as performed by Steely Dan. They were unique for a short while.

Just about everything else, except maybe parts of Katy Lied, is absolutely godawful. Aja is detestable garbage of the highest order.

Alright. Back to Steely Dan....

Ya know, he doesn't really need a defender, cause he's doing just fine in this world; nonetheless, I feel obliged to say that Dave Grohl is a nice fucking dude. I had a drink with him one time and found him to be a solid guy. I also find him talking about music to be a lot more interesting than the music he has been playing.

It's interesting to see how some people who make really boring rock music actually aren't phoning it in. They worked really, really hard on something that seems pretty generic. This is true of Alkaline Trio and Coldplay as well. Genuine passion, comes out genuine plastic.

I think the recording studio and producers are the place where good ideas get overworked and glossed until they come out like a non-fat vanilla latte from starbucks. Bad things can happen to art with a million dollar budget.

Steely Dan were a lot of things but they were not a vanilla latte.

I've heard so many people say this, only to find out that they recognized like five different Steely Dan songs that they just never knew were by Steely Dan.

It's like...

"I've never heard Steely Dan'.

Play "Peg" for them.

"Oh, *that's* Steely Dan?"

Play "My Old School" for them

"Wait, that's Steely Dan?!?"

Play "Hey Nineteen" or "Josie" or something or other...

It seems like the only way to be an American adult without ever having heard Steely Dan is to just never listen to music in public, or teevee, on the radio, whatever, through your whole life. Their songs are all over the place.

In my case, I have some on the memory card in my phone.
"The bastards have landed"

Argumentum ad populum - always a solid rhetorical strategy!

Do you really equate the people on this board (most importantly their tastes and views) with the general public? I think the general public would be like, 90% for Steely Dan. The fact that this board has not crap over crap is pretty impressive to me.

Appeals to popularity say nothing about the "general" public, and frankly your inability to understand why posting an opinion poll does not prove your point (the subjective goodness of a particular band) is indicative of a larger rhetorical deficit than I'm prepared to correct with a simple response.
