Should you maybe "archive" the older stuff and make it so you have to choose how far back you want to search?
Yeah, I was thinking about that, but that still doesn't completely fix the search feature.
It's pretty common to move old posts to an archive forum of some sort to ease the load.
We could also upgrade the forum software. I'm sure the newer version of phpBB handles searching better/smarter.
It might also mean that we're just to load intensive for our current host and we might have to move to a bigger/beefier/non-shared one.
There's no doubt that some things on the site are starting to show their age.

Google site-specific search seems like a good alternative.

Yes, and there was a firefox plugin that I made a while back for searching the site via google. Someone will have to kerble it.

What's wrong/old about my avatar? Should it be smoking?

If the search function cases so much troubles, why not disable it (or make it a studio questions/tech room only thing, so PRF could serve it's purpose). Google does the job well enough.
And THANK YOU for bringing it back.

I may just do that, but I'm not convinced that that is the problem.
And THANK YOU for bringing it back.
Thanks.
