i have a friend with a mexi p bass. he still plays it stock. nothing wrong with them. good. durable instruments. they sound pretty cool.
the bassist in bloc party had a mexican one stock and he recorded the first record with it. i dont like that band at all, but the bass sounds pretty good on that record in my opinion.
ok, for upgrades? a pickup is the easy one. watch out with the badass bridge. it adds mass, sustain and some treble to the sound, but it's not something that absolutely everybody will like. it will make the bass sound more 'modern' and 'pro' in some way.

Add two strings. Replace pickups with soapbars. New bridge. New nut.

So... in conclusion I have chosen a Nordstrand NP4 pickup... and a Badass II bridge. If I could find one of those Audere preamps for a PBass that would be an option too...
What's up with the sanding down the neck thing?

I pretty much hate active electronics in basses.
I didn't care for them either until I bought the Audere. It's pretty transparent and it enhances, not colors your current bass sound. When I bought my Jazz, it had a J-Retro in it. I hated that thing. It was way too hi-fi sounding and I could not get a natural sound out of my bass. It cut every bit of the growl that Jazz basses are known for.
