WTF?

NYC makes sure those ticket prices are high to keep Baltimore in Baltimore.
Normally, I would find something like this funny, but now I'm stuck taking Greyhound to NYC this Friday.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish welding my aluminum neck brace.

This drive sucks. Taking I-80, you'll be seeing the post-industrial armpit of America. A decent half of the route will be toll roads, which will cost you. I wouldn't do it. AirTran is offering $129 one-way from LGA to MDW right now.

Time-wise, you figure an hour to LGA, an hour at LGA, an hour to 1-1/2 hour delay leaving LGA, two hours in the air, a half-hour on the ground at MDW and another 45 to downtown on the train = 6.75 hours in transit total as compared to 12-14 hours driving.

Cost wise, you rent a car for $85/day with insurance, plus gas at $4/gal at 30 MPG over 800 miles, plus tolls = about $230 vs. $129 per person airfare.

If you do drive, try to take a side trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, in Bear Run, which is in southwest Pennsylvania.

Now, if you were going to drive from LA or San Fransisco to Denver, I'd say go for it. The western third of the US has all the incredible scenery!

Is this do-able? How long would it (roughly) take (in hours)? Are we better off getting some other form of transport there?

If it's only a few days (three?) in Chicago driving eats into at least one entire day (assuming you'd drive to Chicago and back to NY).

It may cost a bit more to fly, but the time you will get out of it might be worth more.

And everyone is correct, the drive sucks. But if you like Hardee's you'll be able to stop about about six of them during the drive. If you don't like Hardee's, I got nuthin'.

We did this last fall. Took us about 13 hours. I'm no geographer, but Pennsylvania is one-hundred thousand miles long, by my estimation. When we finally got out of Pennsylvania, I think I came a little.

I usually hate long drives because I'm a nervous passenger, but it wasn't that bad. If you're with good people and split the driving, it'll be over before you know it. There is something satisfying about covering that much ground.

America--It's long!

Totally. We'll come!

Well it's just going to be me and my girlfriend. We're only going to be in New York for about a week, so I reckon we'll fly to Chicago. I don't hate driving, but I usually do most of it, and I don't feel like driving 12 - 14 hours.
