For the record, I replaced the output transformer in my 1966 Pro Reverb with a beefier version from Allen amps. I did this because wax potting melted on the other one.

The Allen ended up sounding a LOT better. Really. For me, the replacement was a positive thing.

J. I'd day if you can afford it, try the replacement, but make sure you get one that requires no drilling. Replacing a transformer is four bolts and five wires. In your case, there is also the switch, but that's no big deal. If you don't like the sounds, you can re-sell the tranny on ebay and only end up with a small cost for the experiment.
