None of them kept me absolutely rapt in attention or made me feel as physically uncomfortable (series of unconnected disturbing thoughts running through my head, each displacing the previous, less perverse one) as Kansas legends Mudhead, who also had the benefit of being really good.

They had no schtick, no gimmick. Their vocalist had some physical problems, but that's not it either. There was some kind of purging going on that I find hard to describe.

Perhaps Mark Greenberg has some photos he can post...

I will have to dig out some photos. And I agree... they were hard to ignore or look away from, partially due to the two foxy guitar playing gals, yes? (Yes.) Mott-ly, the singer, at the time had a prosthetic leg and often times a pegleg. For many years (maybe still?) if you were a band playing in KC, you knew Mott liked your band if he threw his leg at you on stage like old ladies throw undies at Tom Jones. It was always an honor.

And though it was Kansas in which you saw them, they were from Kansas City, MO. The only things in Kansas City, KS are pawn shops and a burger place that sends your food to you by way of a rigged-up toy train.

Detroit Grand Pubbas......
They played in a shitty festival in Switzerland last summer. They played in front of maybe 21 people compltely stoned at 2:00AM....apart from playing music, they just showed their arses during the whole set.Pretty funny for the first 10 minutes but after a while,it was getting a bit uncomfortable and surreal as everyone was leaving.Good gig though.

Fun-Damental......
British hip hop act in the mid-90's very agressive on stage and wearing extremistst arabic clothes.Probably the only gig I saw where the audience was relieved when the band left the stage.Everybody really hold their breath for 1 hour, too scared to move......

And I had my Aphex Twin experience too......thank you again James for that abrasive paper set!!!!!

I was also thinking of this. Especially the guy with three fingers who plays the trumpet (Andy Diagram?). Plus anyone who plays a MIDI guitar is automatically wierd.

Once, when I went to see them, David Thomas left the stage in tears and had to be coaxed back on the stage by the Pale Boys. Was it real or theatre? Who knows?

Eerie.

This was, by far, one of the weirdest performances that I have ever seen. I've seen stranger stuff, but this show was just this side of surreal. Half-surreal, if you will, which is what made it weirder.

If this show was a scene in a movie, then the next scene would feature the walls melting and receeding and, I don't know, Dave Thomas being raised anti-grav-style in a beam of light, as the music/noise swells to deafening volumes.

And then blackness, with a deep pulsing thrum, akin to a low hum being shredded.

And then I'd open my eyes find myself on a cliff overlooking a valley at night, and everything would go quiet............too quiet.......
