stewart copeland is without a doubt one of the most classy drummers ever. sting is a great vocalist. and since reggae is obviously one of the best genres ever, its worth noting that few rock bands have adapted reggae as tastefully as the police (dont try suggest that the clash have done it well.... no way). i heard the studio version of the eagles' "hotel california" the other day and it occurred to me, some bands like the eagles must sit around the studio and say "hmmm, lets just add these cliche upstrokes and people will think we're like bob marley and the wailers!!" but not the police... they know their stuff and have created great adaptations of reggae music. and their not-so-reggae stuff can be cool also.

I am on record as stating that The Police are CRAP. However, I heard "Man In A Suitcase" the other day. I like that song.

I also like that crazy world tour that they did around the time of "Zenyatta Mondatta". They played in India, Egypt and Latin America, for crying out loud.

And more bands could stand to have their Dudley Moore-ish guitarists sing strange and funny songs about falling in love with an inflatable sex doll.

They put on one of the loudest, if not the loudest, shows that I've ever seen/heard. Andy Summers had a crewcut. They had a three-piece brass section that played the notey synthesizer part in the middle section of "Spirits In The Material World". The English Beat opened.

I can also say without question that The Police are the best band that I've ever seen at the UNI-dome.

But really, "Walking In Your Footsteps"? One World (Not Three) -- even seeing/hearing that song performed live with Ranking Roger?

The Police must be held accountable.

JUst for the sake of pointless argument, I'd like to ask how much this applies to Sting himself. Has he ever really been guilty of show-offy playing? If so, I haven't heard it. For one of the most 'legendary' bassists in the world, it seems like he was doing a lot of 'duh-duh-duh-duh' type basswork, especially with the Police.

Maybe I'm wrong about Sting overplaying, but he's still guilty of being Sting.

The Pop Group and the Slits come to mind. Two bands that are far better than not only the Police, but most other bands.

I still think of that song "Mother" when I see my mom's number on caller ID.

I can't hate the Police because their first few albums (OK, all of them) were the soundtrack to my childhood. I actually *miss* Zenyatta Mondatta and Outlandos D'Amour, and I think I have to go out and buy them on CD because I can't remember where my vinyl copies are.

* Though both of these offenses are arguably Sting's alone, he committed them while in the Police, hence my vote.

anyone ever notice the similarities between "invisible sun" and sonic youth's "theresa's sound world"? i doubt there was any direct influence, but the feel is somehow strangely similar.
