F.U.G.A.Z.I. => effyugy azy eye? effigy lazy eye?
we could spend all day discussing cool acronyms that are also words, but that's a slightly different topic. and it would take forever.

i learned my version in a PBS documentary about the history of trucks. searching the net, i come up with numerous sources that claim either version.

the document you've linked to does nothing to show that ford didn't choose the convention to go along with the name of the popeye character (eugene the jeep) which many sources claim to be the true origin of the name. a popeye cartoon.

this is truly one of life's greatest mysteries. like who would win in a fight between bigfoot, the loch ness monster, and some bees.

yes, but none of the sources that mention both versions go on to claim general purpose. the general purpose camp is ignorant of this rather convincing ford document.

that's because eugene the jeep was not ever known as eugene the GP. these trucks [even if they were an homage to eugene. i am not claiming either way] were once called GP's. now we can say why.

I'm fairly certain I remember reading a Popeye history book that claims the character was named after the vehicle, not vice versa. I've never heard anyone claim that the vehicle was named after the character before this thread.
