Damn! I need to move up there!numberthirty wrote:Northern Illinois -The Music Box is on it this fall:The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari with live organ/Saturday September 10th at noon.13 Universal horror films including Creature From The Black Lagoon in 3D/October 22-27th.Fulci's Zombi, The Thing, Night Of The Creeps, and Cronenberg's The Fly/Midnight Movies September-November.I watched this thing called The Violent Kind last night. It was okay. This biker gang (the members of which weirdly listen to crappy pop-punk) fights these rockabilly dudes who turn out to be like spooky suppernatural ghouls or something. It started off fairly strong--one scene in partic was unhinged in a manner reminiscent of Evil Dead II--but got progressively more and more stupid and uninteresting as it went on.- One good fight scene.- Fairly graphic effects, if you care about that kind of thing. I don't!- Mercifully no winking at the audience.- Lots of presumably unintentionally silly dialogue.- Lots of cute girls. Especially the two rockabilly girls. Um, especially the one with the tattoo on her hip.- Zero chains being whipped around. In a movie full of bikers and Fonzies, this is a big "minus."I'm a regular Joe Bob Briggs!I will also mention that I'm re-reading a collection of Edogawa Rampo stories. Man, that guy was great. Wish I could write mystery stories like that. Or at all!

numberthirty wrote:Night Of The CreepsThis is with the leeches, right? I remember attempting to watch it maybe a year ago and lost interest but I'd like to give it another go.I recently watched a couple of decent flicks: Wake Wood and Evil Things, with Wake Wood being the better of the two. It's a super retelling of the story of The Monkey's Paw, somewhat. Classic horror. Evil Things is another found footage movie dealing with kids in a house in the woods, getting lost in the woods, blah blah blah, but then does a complete 180 into a home invasion type film like The Strangers. Interesting perspectives and I'm not sure I'm completely into the ending, but it was different.

I just watched Rubber do not recommend it. I liked the first ten minutes, and thought it had potential. anyone else see it, and think it was painfully boring?

What are anyone's thoughts on Lovecraft's The Dreams in the Witch-House? I found it quite hard to stick with and pretty repetitive (sleep and weird dreams followed by waking up and feeling odd etc. repeated for ages) but the last twenty or so pages it really came together nicely. I know it's not highly regarded by Lovecraft followers but I didn't think anything about it was exceptionally bad. In fact overall it was probably better written and formed than The Statement of Randolph Carter which followed it in the collection I have.

I really enjoy reading the horror stories that people have about their weird findings in video games, glitches and stuff. There are some great ones for Majora's Mask.

M.R James' Casting the Runes is genius. Having so much fun with the Collected Ghost Stories. I've been reading between him and Lovecraft at snails pace just to make it last longer. Anyone alive in Britain in the 70s used to watch the M.R. James film adaptation the BBC did every Christmas Day for a few years? I haven't seen them all but the ones I have are quite good. This one in particular is worth your time. It has a very creepy scene with a boy and a hurdy gurdy. Not kidding.

So has anyone seen Lucky McKee's The Woman yet... ? Felt pretty sick after it, but it's a pretty good film too. Kind of Hostel meets Juno but better than that sounds. The finale is a hoot.
