I recently got a new Technics 1200 Mk2 as a gift and it sounds fantastic. I have a Shure m97xe cartridge in it.
I don't 'spin' and I know these are not the coolest turntables to have, but it's been great to me so far...and is such an improvement over my old Technics BD35.

22Thorens.
I've had my TD160 since 1974, and it still operates flawlessly.
They're also pretty cheap. click here

if you search this forum for "turntable rega," using the 'all search terms' match, you will find oh so much info on turntables

Try 2 grams, really, it's ok. More damage is usually done to the groove walls by tracking too lightly.
You also may want to step up to one of the wood bodied Grado's, it made a world of difference for me.
The problem with my current setup is it will not track the really hot dynamic parts well

26Hey, gang ...
For those of you who posted with advice on a new turntable, I just wanted to pass along a belated thank you and add that I bit the bullet and bought a new Rega P3, which I picked up last night. I was going to go with the P2 until the guy at the audio shop plugged in the P3 and dammit if I couldn't clearly hear the difference. It's a really clean sounding and well crafted piece of equipment, and while I wasn't originally planning on spending over $500 on a turntable, I have to say this machine strikes me as high value for money. Thanks to the Rega advocates who posted, and everyone else who shared their knowledge (and btw, it's my understanding VPI turntables are no longer available in the states, though their way cool record cleaning machines are).
Cheers,
Mark Lansing

27I would advise only one brand: REVOX
My parents ended up giving me their Revox B795,bought in the early 80's.
The cartridge needed to be fixed (something wrong about the pressure and its weight),but now it works fine and ready to be used another 20 years.
But it seems to be pretty difficult to find old Revox turntables in the US.

yeah, it's no contest between the P2 and P3, is it? i think the P2, which is still a decent ttable, exists mainly to sell P3s.

29I've got a Project Debut. It's one of their lesser models, they do range into 4 figures. Mine was around £150. It comes with an Ortofon 5 cartridge, which seems good although it's quite low priced.
It's played great for me for the last couple of years. Including me leaving it on playing a record for 2 days once! OOOPS
Don't know again if there are stockists in the US. A friend of mine in New York just bought one, but I don't know whether he bought it here in the UK and took it back with him.
Check them out.

30As it happens, the place where I got my Rega (Overture Audio in Ann Arbor, Michigan -- good little store and nice guys, used Muddy Waters as a demo album instead of some godawful fake jazz crap like most places) also carries Project, so apparently they have a U.S. distributor. I looked at the Project 1.2 and thought it was a really nice turntable, but it was priced at $420 while the Rega P2 was $490, so I figured I may as well spend the extra bucks and get the Rega, which really is a more solid piece of gear. Then I made the mistake of A and B-ing the Rega P2 and the Rega P3, and the slope got slippery after that ...
The guy that runs Overture spoke quite well of the Project tables, and the one I tried out sounded and felt pretty nice; apparently the Debut can be had for $300, so fellow analog fascists may want to look into it.
