Hey Guys,

I just called The Sound Surgeon. Peter was very nice and assured me they use a real Beyer replacement ribbon from Germany. The cost is $240 plus shipping for a full "refurbishing". He said he can get the dent out of my screen and make sure my connections are good.

If it doesn't need a ribbon he'll only charge me the labor to fix connections and give it a little TLC.

That's weird, Beyer didn't steer me anywhere else when I wrote them about my M500 needing reribboning. They just told me they'd refurbish it. Here's the response I got from them:

"Reribboning does not always fix the problem. We do a refurb for 180. This
replaces 80 percent of the mic."

Maybe the double-ribboned M160 would cost more, but if not the Beyer refurb sounds like a better deal.

I wrote them a year ago and am just getting around to sending it. Now I'm thinking I better check with them again before sending the mic off in case they now refer all repairs to The Sound Surgeon.

The Sound Surgeon are the official repair place now I guess... they even have a nifty repair form you have to fill out with BEYERDYNAMIC on the top of it.

$240 seems a bit steep.

Nobody else can get the Beyer parts from what I can tell. I called both Sank and Kane, they both use the RCA style ribbon.

I think these guys are Beyer's guys.

I reckon it's reasonable - that'll probably include a whole new "motor" assembly. The Beyer ribbon is quite different in the way that it works since it is not corrugated conventionally. It'd be nice to A/B the difference between an ENAK version and a Beyer.

By the way, you can pop the top of the grill of if yo want to be nosey.

Also I just removed the connector again on a hunch and sho'nuff the wires are severed. All of that twisting of those brittle old wires has broken them. It may not be the ribbon after all.

unfortunately one of the the wires is broken clear down to the transformer with little to no lead left to speak of.

How hard is it to pull the transformer out and try to attached new leads? is this a cheaper remplacement than the motor?

The top can be popped off with just a blade screwdriver. There is a slight lip around the basket where the top half attaches.

I'd maybe have a bash at re-soldering those wires though. Some heatshrink may help you. Having the wire broken near the transformer doesn't sound great. The transformer doesn't come out easily, in fact, I'm not sure you can remove it at the socket-end. If your socket threads in, twist in anti-clockwise first so that by the time you've screwed it in, it hasn't snapped the wires due to too much twisting.
