Small update on this as the session is on Sunday, and I've been on a bit of a gear spree fuelled by here, google, and lust. The finalised list is as follows:1. Kick front - Beta 52a2. Kick batter/snare bottom - AT20353. Snare - Beyer M81 / Beyer M201 (test/decide tomorrow at rehearsal)4. High Tom - Oktava MK0125. Floor Tom - Oktava MK012 6. OH left - C10007. OH Right - C10008. MID - AT20359. Side - Behringer PRO-2B 10. Room 1 - e60911. Room 2 - e60912. GTR Bright - Pro 3713. GTR Dark - sE VR1 ribbon14. GTR room - R102 Ribbon15. BASS bright - AT203116. BASS dark - Beyer M380 The C1000's as overheads is annoying but are an unavoidable compromise. I have a pair of Pro 37's on their way but I took a gamble shipping from the US to the UK to save but, thanks to the shit eBay Global Shipping Program...they're not gonna arrive in time (the hall is booked and paid for). It'll be fine, just will take a little extra EQ'ing to fix things.Mild compromise using dynamics as far room mics for the drums too but, there's likely to be a fair bit of room sound from the MS setup and even into the close mics as it's a VERY lively room.Guitar sound has been firm since day one, only addition is a ribbon for a room mic in case I want to change the vibe in certain songs. Bass is going to be recorded very dry and tight so no room mic required.I also finished building my fully portable rig too:2x Motu 8pre's into a custom built rack PC running 16gb ram, Windows 7, 2x 1TB drives, Firewire 400, silent fans and a stripped OS.Also got hold of a rack-mounted monitor/keyboard thing too:...roll on Sunday!!

Bon Hoga wrote:Went the day well?Very very well actually! I've got today off to mix it and it's pretty much done (i don't like to overwork it).Only one thing went wrong...seems one of the Oktava MK012s died early on - that was on the high tom - it's taking signal, but distorted (no, it wasn't clipping). Dunno. Thankfully there was so mics on the kit it isn't needed so much as the MS and overheads got it good.I'll post some clips once I'm happy with them.

Hey that staccato guitar part from about 1:28-48 sounds pretty sweet. Fist bump to the guitarist

Mixing etc all finished last night. We're very happy with how it came out.If you're at all interested, here's one of the tracks done. If you could not share it (if you were so inclined) for the time being as it's not due for release for a while. But I thought, seeing as you were all so much help, I'd let you hear how it sounds...https://m.soundcloud.com/secret-black-boyfriend/8-hepatinnitus-mp3Opinions etc welcome

I'm no recording engineer, but let's just say you didn't fuck it up.

This thread is awesome for all the reasons. I'm a crap musician and know even less about recording, but that song sounds great! I wasn't sure if I liked the vocals the first listen, but I just listened again and it all clicked. I will definitely be listening to more of you guys!

This sounds pretty great. You did a great job. That hi hat is way too loud, but I think ALL hi hats are too loud. Fuck a bunch of loud hi hats.Good job.PS. Did you take the guitar Direct, because at times, It sort of sounds like a direct guitar tone. It has that aggressively dry, poky tone you get from a DI guitar. If not... maybe I'm going bonkers. Either way... you did well.

Either way... you did well.Agreed. The hi hat gets in EVERY FUCKING MIC. I stopped using a dedicated hat mic about a decade ago when I realised I never actually ended up mixing any in!No DI on the guitar. That is my sound. That's a simple chain of: Jazzmaster > SHO > OR120 > SVT810 into a AT Pro 37 paired with an sE VR1 ribbon. I'm think it's devoid of eq and compression on the tracks themselves too and just some from the master bus! numberthirty wrote:So, the obvious question...Did you ballpark what you set out to do?Absolutely I'm extremely pleased with it and how it went....and am very grateful for the advice received here! numberthirty wrote:Also, that intro is totally Nonagon...I have no idea what this is, but I'll look it up, artist/song?
