Dave N. wrote:Look up some Japanese taiko. Maybe FM Kaleb can jump in and make recommendations, as he's the one who made me aware of it. Good, powerful stuff.amazing music, the Spoils are covering a song by the pioneers of the form, KODO:phpBB [media]KODO are the most well-known, they're a kind of monastic group that spends half the year practicing on their own island compound and then spends the other half touring the world. But taiko is very widespread across Japan, most cities and towns have quasi-official groups of varying levels of professionalism that perform at local festivals. I joined two groups when I was there, one in the nearest city that practiced and did some pretty major shows on the old Tsuyama castle grounds, and the other a much more casual affair that was half an excuse for friends to hang out and drink and be loud, but we did perform at some municipal events. Here's another major group, hour-long concert:phpBB [media]

How about Ionisation by Varèse?This is a particularly funky version:phpBB [media]There's Pléïades by Xenakis, but I found it so terrifying I only ever listened to it once.

Nice.I know a dude who studied trimba with him and is keeping the music alive, Stefan Lakatos. Here's an excerpt from a weird, krauty improvised thing we did back in '08, for the hell of it:phpBB [media]

Most of Moondog's work is rhythm based. He seems to have been an early influence on Reich and other minimalists.Moondog even invented his own percussion instrument, the trimba:Difficult to describe his music, but his twin obsessions were rhythm and baroque music. I guess he thought Bach needed a drummer.phpBB [media]phpBB [media]phpBB [media]
