I'm a fan of the 8x12 and 16x16 tom combo, as opposed to the more common 9x13/16x16 configuration. I think a 12" has a nicer contrast without getting too "pingy".

I’ve never understood why drum sizes are always spoken of with the less important measurement first. Then again I’ve never understood why guitar counts the furthest string from your perspective, the high E, as the “first” string.

As far as other cylindrical tubing goes I guess it makes sense that the length would be more important than the diameter. What bothers me more is that it's referred to as 'height', and speaking of drums in terms of 'tallness'..
