Where are you based geographically?
Denver, CO
Ah I was hoping I knew of a good guitar store where you might play your way around a room full of weirdo acoustics. A long shot but not even close. If by any chance you are going to Nashville sometime soon, then checkout Fanny’s House of Music. The usually have a bunch of wonderful flat and arch tops for <$1000.

Thanks for thinking of it. I've never been to Tennessee but it's on my short list of remaining states to visit.

There are a couple shops in town with some decent instruments to play. One in particular stocks Martin, Guild, Breedlove and Eastman. If nothing else I should go in there and strum and note what clicks with me.

I'm not an acoustic guy, so it shouldn't mean too much that my favorite acoustic I owned was an old, beat to shit Yamaha. Even though it was made in Taiwan with a laminate top it sounded amazingly deep and lovely.

But it needed a neck reset. I had to tune down below C just to comfortably play it. And that is the real problem with old Yamahas. Neck resets are very difficult and might cost more than the guitar is worth (even the desirable Japanese models). They use glue that doesn't play release well with heat and may or may not have screws or what have you in there. I don't recall, but I read a lot of horror stories several years ago and recently read similar. I'd like to be wrong because there are a lot of these guitars out there and they are pretty rad.

I'd research this issue on any old Japanese or really any less typical acoustics. As I understand it, most guitars wind up needing a reset eventually.

does anyone know of a company that makes a nylon (classical) style guitar that doesn't have a ridiculous extra flat and wide neck? I like playing nylon strings but it just isn't fun to play a 2x4. I tried ball end nylon strings on a regular acoustic but it sounded like shit and never really felt like it was in tune.

Seems like something Elisha could work up for you

Godin have some really nice and well made (albeit ugly) nylon guitars with scale length and radius closer to a standard electric.
DIY and die anyway.

This is pretty rare, as nylon stringed guitars are played fingerstlye for the most part. Yup - nylons on a steel string flattop will not have enough vibrational force to make the top resonate properly, since it will be braced to handle the tension of steel strings.

Me I am the opposite. A 2” nut is my comfort zone. My fave guitar is a Gibson F25. Steel string flattop - 2”/51mm nut - dead flat fretboard. One day I want someone to make me a fretless Jaguar with a 2” nut. Shall hit Cindy up when I have the dough

Its the ultra flat fingerboard I hate. Our Ibanez almost feels concave. I just want a little roundness to it.
