I really like how I've gotten my setup working, my gut is just telling me I need some outboard EQ in this area. The pultec's are cool, and I would say even the cheaper ones are better than nothing, but they don't seem like a utility for recording a single-source in, more for mixing or sub mixing and getting a blend of frequencies to play better with each other.

I would say my budget is probably going to be under $500 here. All the high end stuff would be great, but I just need a simple tool that EQs, preferably a dual-channel with stereo linking, though I'm probably asking for too much there.

Now, I would def love to use a pultec EQ as software in a submix or a general mix, but I haven't quite gotten to that point yet to look into what's available on Linux.
"Grumpy Uncle" again...

When it comes to hardware?

I have kicked myself enough times to learn that buying better hardware means buying stuff that is less likely to break.

"Simple..." stuff that breaks on you isn't really the best investment.

I'm being a wet blanket, I know. Just felt like that bit needed to be said. Always think twice about buying a thousand dollar car.

After many a conversation over at Tapeop, and reading tons of reviews, it just seemed like the right move is to get more 500 series rack space going.

So many people love both the parametric, and the graphic API units, and some have suggested the Purple graphic eq beats the API. Elysia makes really cool stuff. The Chandler Germanium EQ looks really cool, but is pricey (and only available used).

If I can ever stop lusting after compressors, fancy mics, and guitars I'm going the 500 series route.
The only problem with 500 series is that the expense of the rack is a hard pill to swallow. I'm just looking for an EQ to start with.

Honestly, I don't care about cheap, unless it's noisy. That would be counter productive.

After I make a few gold records, I'll probably look for something more high-end. :P

Just to point it out, there are more "Budget Friendly..." enclosure/power supply options these days. Even more so if you can live with buying second hand.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. I agree with myself and Twelvepoint. A used live board is going to offer a ton of utility. If footprint is an issue, look to a Allen Heath Mix Wizard, or Crest X20r or something like that. I see Allen Heath GL 2200 and 2400 on Craigs List all the time for $200 - $400. If you have the room, it does a ton of heavy lifting. It's what I have been using and they are so cheap, I might buy a second one just to keep this one working, though I haven't had any issues with it other than changing a fan in the Powersupply.

Here is a Studiomaster (not the best... but there is worse) for $300 in Chicago. You can probably find a ton of similar options at that price too. He says it works.

It's not going to be a API or anything, but as long as the noise floor isn't too high, you can make records on it.

The Radial 3 unit, single rack space thing seems like the best bargain in 500 series setups. The 8-10 space boxes from Api, Never etc are a brutal expense for such an unfun bit of logistical periphery.

This company makes reasonable racks. Can't speak for the quality of the PS though.

Every piece of Radial equipment that I have owned has been nothing short of "Buddy Lee..."/"Seventies/Eighties Peavey..." sturdy.
I had a bad shipment (8) of iso blocks that all dropped signal between 15 to 18 dB of gain and they refused to exchange them. They doubted that I was measuring the level correctly. I even sent them a video of my testing. They were prcks about it.
